(More customer reviews)I got this book along with a number of other blues books, and this one has been my favorite.It doesn't contain as much material as the multivolume Alfred series, but I find the organization, presentation, and *especially* the examples to be superior in Mark's work.The way the examples build section by section and chapter by chapter is exquisite.They are musically interesting yet very focused on the point at hand--I always enjoyed playing through the examples, but was never confused by unnecessary complications.

The companion CD is the best I've seen in any music instruction book, ever.Most examples have the left and right hand parts on the left and right channels, so you can mute one speaker or the other for "hands seperate" practicing.I personally don't use this much, as I prefer to work it out with the metronome, but I'm glad it's there and you may appreciate it.On tracks that have a backing band, the band is on one side and the keyboard on the other so you can play along to just the band.Finally, the "complete" examples at the end of the book feature a "slow" and "fast" version on the CD.One nitpick: I wish he'd included (in the text) the metronome settings he used, making it easier to practice/jam without the CD.

I've got several of the Hal Leonard books in this series, and they're not all by Mark Harrison.His books are definitely a cut above.All in all, if you have any interest in the subject whatsoever, you can't go wrong with this book.

The cleaness of the lay-out the use of original language only with a literal and literate translation by Martha Gerhart at the beginning of the of the score and thechoice of arias for the young singer are commendable. The inclusion ofcadenze and oppure, not found in other collections, is valuable. However,all of the anthologies edited by Larsen have the same problem. Page turns.Larsen is a fine pianist and should know better. I have had many pianistscomplain about or refuse to play from Larsen scores. Whenever a difficultpassage to play occurs it is invaribly on a page turn. The collection is agreat study tool, but less than ideal in performance.

If you want to put it in front of you at the keyboard to play and sing, the print is too small to use. If you are going to use a fake book, buy the bigger version of this same book. (More customer reviews)Being a Mahler lover, composer, timpanist, and conductor, I constantly pour through recordings and scores of his works.This edition, while a fine orchestral score, is full of errors which Mahler later corrected.While the musical ideas and feeling of the works here are present, there are some details which differ from newer editions.Do not be fooled; every note these scores contain are Mahlers own. But these are first-edition, first performance scores.Mahler was notorious--conductor that he was--for editing and revising his works after premieres.I have looked at other scores, later, more difinitive scores, which show errors, and some are quite audiable in recordings.But for any young conductor to get a flavor for the structure of these works, the Dover edition is the most practical and cost effective score to buy.

(More customer reviews)This is cool for a couple reasons. The book has musical notation, capo position info and chord indicator for capoed position and without. The CD is narrated by Tony Rice and at times he is a hoot. He does the songs at a slower pace that we mere mortals can appreciate and then at his blinding speed as well. He even includes the rhythm parts to practice with (slower versions of course). Who would have thought anyone could be accompanied by Tony Rice! After practicing a few of the songs in this book, I found myself more at ease taking breaks to songs I was playing for the first time at jams. It is probably due more to the practice, but I am for whatever motivates you to pick it up and play. Enjoy!

Definitely for the advanced player... reading music... a huge help here.

Neil Young: Greatest Hits (Piano/Vocal/Chords) Review

(More customer reviews)Some of the best Neil Young tunes here-in .....well-made with decent notation to fiddle around with my meager keyboard skills which equals hours of enjoyment.

While true Neil Young fans know his treasure-rich songwriting career encompasses many many fine tunes not in this collection, it's difficult to find much fault in these sixteen beauties. (I am lucky to have purchased both "On the Beach" and "Zuma" songbooks for piano/guitar when available in the 70's)

Greatist Hits starts with "Down by the River"; easy to hear the plaintive cry of lost love. But I also wonder if Neil's choices of chords/melody were a direct or otherwise influence when Pink Floyd's group effort "Breathe" came out a few years later? Inneresting, but as Neil says onstage, "It's all the same song!"

Well, if you like the music of Neil Young, buy this and mess around with the music (whether you can read notes on the music staff or not isn't critcal)to see which chords are played in first position, and which aren't. Listen carefully enough from the "way it sounds" vs.the recordings; then you can consider the songbook purchase a substitute for a few piano lessons and learn to pick out some great tunes.

(More customer reviews)The product description doesn't do this justice.This is a terrific resource if you want to flatpick fiddle/bluegrass/OT tunes.There are 20 standard tunes.Each has the following 4 parts laid out in notation and tab

1.A beginner's version;
2.An intermediate version;
3.An advanced "hotrod" version worthy of a contest;
4.An ending that can probably also be used to end any other tune in the same key, so it's very versatile.

It's recommended you work through all the beginner versions before going onto the intermediate; it'll take you several months do that.

The CDs walk you through each tune, though I'm not big on CD instruction.Nevertheless, the CDs also have a full speed version of each tune where Steve plays through all three versions (and then repeats the beginner version).I found that putting all 20 fullspeed versions on a CD makes its own great CD and is a good way to "get the songs in your head."

All that's just to give a worthy description.As for my take on it all -- terrific.I was a beginner flatpicker and at first it took some time to get a song under my belt.As I've progressed it takes less time and it's just plain fun to learn good arrangements to standard tunes.And I've still got the intermediate and advanced versions to learn!Just a terrific resource for great tunes.I'm through the beginner versions and am half way through Volume 2 (same set up; same quality).
