(More customer reviews)Like many, I thought that Robin Trower got back together with Jack Bruce in order to produce a cheap payday capitalizing on past glories.After all, even the song titles were rip-offs of old stuff, right?

Well, I was wrong.Instead of a jaded, pale imitation of what used to be, like most rockers past their prime produce, this is actually a heartening reminder that talent and true greatness stand the test of time.I will readily agree that Trower and Bruce are not going to win any beauty contests these days; it's actually kind of heartbreaking to see how they've aged.

But, DESPITE the ravages of time, Bruce can still produce jewels like "Just Another Day", which is just as good as anything on his masterwork, "Harmony Row".And Robin Trower plays ridiculously well for a sixty-four year old. He plays the Cream classic songs effortlessly, but he really shines on the new stuff like "Seven Moons", "So Far to Yesterday", and "The Last Door".

In the final analysis, there aren't that many rock musicians that you can classify as "significantly creative artists".But these are two such musicians, from a generation that lifted rock music toward respectability.

Look at the people Bruce has worked with: John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Chris Spedding, Gary Moore, Carla Bley, Frank Zappa.Jack has the kind of musical intelligence that transcends genres.Trower has the flowing style of soloing that can remind you of a jazz saxophonist, and he is never anything less than tasteful.

So my advice is to get past the wrinkles, and enjoy the music.Jazz player Roland Kirk kept playing after debilitating strokes.Johnny Cash still commanded respect when he was frail of health.

Just be glad that these guys are still around, still creative, still sharing their gifts.What they're doing, in the face of a music industry that only loves pretty faces, is nothing short of HEROIC.

Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets Review

(More customer reviews)This is essentially the "Alien Love Secrets" album, which was recorded around 1994, with Steve Vai and his group lip/finger synching along with the music. Mr. Vai accurately and quite interestingly synchs along, as precisely as you'd expect from someone of his perfectionist qualities. Needless to say, while it's not an authentic performance of the songs, but rather a recording of the guys synching along with a prior recording, it's the next best thing.
Not much else to comment on, as far as the performance is concerned. It takes place on one set, with Steve changing suits/skin colors (!!) between several of the tracks. His children even show up on "Ya Yo Gakk" and do silly things for the camera. The video transfer is pristine, and I have absolutely no qualms with it.
Now, the extras. The commentary track with Mr. Steve Vai is quite entertaining, although there are dead points here and there where he gets caught up in the movie and doesn't say much. His stories and description of things are always good....you get the feeling that he's sitting there, talking to you specifically about the songs. There are also alternate angles for a couple of tracks, which is nice, but probably won't be accessed more than once or twice. A featurette made as a promotion for his 1996 Epic Records recording, "Fire Garden", lasts about roughly 7-8 minutes, and is fun to watch. A discography, pictures, and other small things round it all up.
Although released pretty early on in the life of DVD technology, it remains one of the more fascinating and worth-while purchases of the musically-related DVD's that have been released up to this point in time. Steve Vai fans, guitar fans....I can't imagine you turning this one away.

(More customer reviews)If you want some extra insight into how these songs are played, these books are always great. But I'm always shocked when these things have so many minor errors. Most notably in this book, the guitar chords for the verse of "I'll Stick Around" are the incorrect form, which is disappointing because the actual chords sound really cool when played correctly. Personally, I see a mistake like that and lose faith in the whole thing. Maybe I'm too picky but if I pay money for a score, I want it to be exact.

Overall, the book gives you a great start when learning these parts if you're struggling figuring it out on your own. But some of the tougher details are really left up to you to figure out.

Hourglass Review

(More customer reviews)Hourglass is the latest offering from James Taylor, although he is rumored to have a new CD entitled "October Roads" due out soon. This is by far one the best of his albums in recent memory, with a number of classic new songs. This is an especially terrific album given the fact that he has been around so long, and such an endless resume of previous accomplishments. Yet Taylor continues to amaze and amuse us with his personal growth and his incredible gifts for observation and songwriting. After all these thirty some years, he still is a master of his craft.
The first song up is a wryly amusing yet poignant song called "Line `Em Up", with references, among other things, to Dick Nixon and his arrogant presentations to the common folk and to the self-absorbed way he exited the White House stage. Next is a lovely albeit sad song called "Enough To Be On Your Way" intended to be a tribute to his brother Alex, dead too soon from an self-abusive and ultimately self-destructive lifestyle. This song is a very thoughtful and searching exploration into the realms of love and loss, and is also a loving portrait of a person (Taylor turned his brother into a female character for dramatic purpose in the song) whose path was always drawn like a moth to the flame.
It also includes his very popular "Little More Time With You", and a number of other interesting and stylistically diverse songs. His interest in the whole earth mother realm in "Gaia" is especially well written, as is "Another Day". This is an album you will play and replay, and it wears well with time. Of course, my favorite here is "Enough To Be On Your Way", which, with some of the songs from his last several albums, is sure to be included on the "James Taylor Great Hits, Volume Three" we can hope will be on the horizon in a year or so.Meanwhile, though, enjoy this one.

(More customer reviews)Wow! Someone finally reissued this excellent book.First published by Straight Arrow Publishers, I bought my copy new back in '72 and read it often. It is a great interview with Garcia at a time when the Dead were just taking off. Garcia reveals he "has just made the commitment" to see where the music takes him, and as we all know, the band really went places. Hopefully, the current publishers have reissued it in its original form.
The second part of the book, "A Stoned Sunday Rap," is a great piece that really gets to the heart and soul of the Dead experience, beyond the music. I've always admired the philosophy behind the music for its zen-like approach to life and living; Garcia and Reich tease out the details.
A must-read for anyone who enjoys the Dead.Much better than any of the tell-alls that have been published recently.

Bob Dylan: 1975-1981: Rolling Thunder & The Gospel Years Review

This thing is four hours long and some of it is pretty hard to take.

We see Dylan impersonator Joel Gilbert traipsing about the country apparently also attempting to impersonate a journalist. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

The use of primitive and amateurish graphic effects during the interviews is unbelievably annoying. A yellow rubber ducky swims across the screen quacking to illuminate Reuben Carter's comment that he took to boxing "like a duck takes to water". When he mentions that boxing was a profession for which he was paid, hundred dollar bills flash before our eyes. As Gilbert asks Carter the deep question "what percentage of boxing is psychology?" the image of Sigmund Freud appears and disappears.

Enough already! And at this point we are only a few minutes into this four hour marathon.

Those true diehards who are able to keep on keeping on are eventually rewarded with some interesting perspectives. Claudia Levy describes theatrical aspects and the staging of the Rolling Thunder concerts. Scarlet Rivera shares in her own words the oft repeated story of Dylan discovering her as she was walking down a Manhattan street with nothing to distinguish her but her violin case and her exotic appearance. Rob Stoner talks about his role maintaining order in the recording studio and on tour...

But it is the interviews from the period of Dylan's conversion to Christianity and its aftermath that are most interesting. Vineyard Christian Fellowship pastor Bill Dwyer describes Dylan as a student in his Bible study class. San Francisco Chronicle writer Joel Selvin characterizes the betrayal felt by many fans blindsided by the Christian content of the 1979 tour. Legendary producer Jerry Wexler speaks to the musical excellence of Slow Train Coming. And back up singer Regina McCrary resonates as she gives glory to the presence of the Holy Spirit in the middle of it all.

Too bad that at the end we must put up with the blather of self proclaimed Dylanologist AJ Weberman. The inclusion of the opinions of Weberman, who made it his business to sift through Dylan's garbage in the Village in the early 70's, adds nothing of value and certainly underscores that this is, in fact, a "totally unauthorized documentary".

If you've seen "The Making of Sgt Pepper" and liked it, this is asimilar treatment of Electric Ladyland. You get to hear individual tracksand interviews from the engineer and band members on how it was all done.Eddie Kramer, Mitch, Noel, all talking about their memories. It has the following titles: Always, Blaze of Glory, Bad Medicine, Blood Money, Dry County, I'll Be There For You, In and Out of Love, In These Arms, Keep the Faith, Livin' on a Prayer, Runaway, Wanted Dead or Alive, You Give Love a Bad Name, Something to Believe In. Which makes it an fun experience. Good for the , I wouldn't recommend it for the Piano though, the only thing I managed to play with the Piano is the beginning of Livin on a Prayer which was quite cool BTW, and the beginning of Wanted Dead or alive, everything else I had to improvise, but hey foir cool solos with acoustic and electric guitar this book is excellent.

Unfortunaley for me, and for anyone who buys this, Alfred publishing does not transcribe every song note for note the way the great Hal Leonard company does with their tba books.
Have already run into 2 spots where solos I wanted to learn are represented by chord names, and a note to "ad lib" the solo! I coulda done that without paying for this book!
Hal Leonard is the ONLY company you should trust for true tab. What a shame Alfred gets the Neil Young books!

Tales of Rock N Roll Review

(More customer reviews)People go on about Schenker's material being much better in his early UFO or MSG days, or about his 'personal problems'. But they just don't get it: Schenker repeatedly emerges from the darkness into the light. Repeatedly there are problems, but repeatedly he comes up with something fantastic. He knows this - that's why he had his guitar fashioned on a black and white motif. As a rule I would say that, as somebody owning all but one of his studio albums, his guitar-work is as a whole unsurpassed in the history of rock - it is his personal experience that goes from black to white and vice versa, not his music. Thus, as I expected, Tales of Rock 'n' Roll is another masterpiece. It is heavy, intense, full of complex and powerful riffing that makes most heavy rock sound weak and uninventive, and provides plenty of tasteful, original, and sometimes stunning lead breaks, often in completely different styles. The album is intense, all 19 tracks merging with one-another, but deserves the 5 or 6 listens required to 'get into it'. Of course, Schenker's own view that the album requires 100 listens sounds completely egotistic and OTT. However, the sophistication of the work is such that it probably will indeed take that many listens to fully appreciate. Schenker is not so much being egotistic as blunt and matter-of-fact. After about 25 listens, my view is that the 19-track blend works well for the first 15 tracks, which in itself is a fantastic achievement. The album really does sound like one great long track up to that point, which makes listening to it a real commitment. The last four tracks seem more like bonus tracks to me - three bonus tracks rather, followed by an outro. In my view, the outro should fade out on a stunning guitar solo of the sort found at the end of Old Man with Sheep on Mars on Adventures of the Imagination. Then, the outro track should be blended with the end of track 15 to form a 16 track unit, followed by the three bonus tracks. Yet, this is to split hairs. If you want the highest quality heavy rock, this album is where you will find it. Buy the CD and let Schenker blow your head off.

(More customer reviews)My 8 year old son picked this book because he loves The Beatles. We both learned a lot about them as he read the book to me. There is information on the childhood of each member, how the band formed, the band's history and each member after the break-up. There was quite a bit in there that I did not know prior to reading the book. A great book for a kid who loves The Beatles and wants to learn more about them. The book also has pictures which makes it fun for the those kids who can read chapters but still enjoy picture books. It was easy for my third-grader to read but he reads at a fifth or sixth grade level. I am sure my son will read this book again and again.

Got this for my husband's birthday; he's been a fan forever. I learned to appreciate them through him.We saw one of the concerts at the Prudential center and had a great time, really enjoyed the show and the fans.Now our boys are growing up and singing along too.

Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards (Book) Review

(More customer reviews)Al Kooper has been rightly called the "Forrest Gump" of rock and roll. Throughout the 60's and 70's he seemed to turn up as a producer or band member with the right group of musicians until he either checked out of a band (the first electric Bob Dylan tour in 1965) or was thrown out (Blood, Sweat and Tears). Over the course of 40 years he's amassed an amazing amount of experiences that he's collected in Backstage Passes and Back Stabbing Bastards. This is the third edition of his music biography first published in 1979, then updated in the mid-90's, and now reissued covering 1998 to the present. "BP&BB" reads very much like a long-form interview you'd see in Rolling Stone (when it was good) or MOJO (always good). While he's never quite gone beyond cult figure status on his own, behind the scenes he's worked with some legends, most notably Bob Dylan and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dylan pops up at various times throughout the book and Al's stories about him are alternately revealing but mostly hilarious. It was Dylan who gave Kooper his "calling card" to rock stardom when he overruled producer Tom Wilson and turned up the organist on "Like a Rolling Stone". The organist was Kooper, who'd BS'd his way onto the session and only jumped on the organ (an instrument he couldn't turn on let alone play) when Mike Bloomfield showed up and shattered Kooper's guitar hero dreams just by tuning up. That session would be both a blessing and a curse for Kooper, who got a ton of session work from producers looking for "that Dylan sound" but left Al wanting something more substantive musically. Enter Dylan, who dragged him onstage at the legendary Newport Folk Festival when he went electric. Al sets the record straight on that show and has a much different version of the event than the history books because he was RIGHT THERE. He was also "right there" when Bob went to Nashville to record "Blonde on Blonde". Al's relationship with Dylan has certainly evolved over the years and from his stories you get the impression that Bob's been doing everything he can to run away from his legacy instead of embracing it.

From there, he joined the Blues Project until they imploded. Organized and performed at Monterey Pop, then formed Blood Sweat and Tears until he was ousted by their drummer following their debut album. That might be the end of the story right? Wrong! Taking the phrase "if you can't beat `em, join `em" to heart, he became a staff producer at CBS Records under "Captain Clive" Davis. His first project would be the legendary "Super Session" album with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper's work with "Bloomers' is a case of missed opportunities, when things were good with him they were very good. They would produce 3 albums together but Mike could be exasperating to deal with. He only appeared on ½ of "SS" and "The Live Adventures", leaving suddenly midway through both due to chronic insomnia and/or a heroin addiction that eventually took his life.

After leaving CBS, he relocated to Atlanta with the idea of forming his own record label (ala` Phil Walden at Capricorn Records). While scouting local talent he spotted a guitar army from Jacksonville and "Sounds of the South's" first artist was Lynyrd Skynyrd. LS seem to have a love/hate relationship with Kooper. While grateful for producing their first 3 albums (as well as hits like "Free Bird", "Gimme 3 Steps" and "Sweet Home Alabama") his production methods seemed to soften the powerhouse sound they had live. It's no wonder he was immortalized as "Mr. Yankee Slicker" in the song "Workin' for MCA".

The one story I wished he'd expanded on was playing with Jimi Hendrix on "Electric Ladyland". They'd met at Monterey Pop and Al received one of Jimi's Strats as a thank-you for his work. That guitar would prove to be more trouble than it was worth later on.

The last 10 years have been something of a rough road for Al. He became an associate professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, became a grandfather, and endured a long recovery from a debilitating eye disorder. But he's still out playing live (with his academic colleagues no less!) and his dry wit is still there, can't wait for volume 4!

(More customer reviews)...I can't help but think that slowing the tracks down on the CD would have made it easier. Also, Perrin doesn't spend much time explaining the actual promised "breakdown" of Slash's work - the full title of the book is THE TECHNIQUES OF SLASH: THE BEST OF GN'R, but the title seems to change throughout - sometimes it's a demonstration of Slash's techniques, sometimes it's just tabs of their best songs with little explanation.

For example, he notes the "power strumming" for Civil War, but doesn't give any advice on how to strum the opening, which is in my opinion the hardest part.

It's still a good book and very useful because it contains accurate transcriptions of the songs, and many of them are indeed their best. However I also bought a tab book for Appetite for Destruction - the only bonus here is a few Use Your Illusion tracks and a CD, because the "tutoring" they promise on the back cover isn't exactly very helpful.

Also, don't be fooled by the back cover - November Rain, Bad Obsession and various others that are listed are NOT transcribed; brief solo passages are contained within a section called "Signature Slash Licks," which basically means you learn to play part of the November Rain solo, NOT the entire song (as I was lead to believe).

There's so much Appetite content in this book, I feel as if I paid twice for the same thing! But at least it has _some_ UYI songs, such as Yesterdays, which is fairly easy to play.

However also be aware that this is very hard - the solo for Sweet Child O' Mine is the hardest solo I've ever played, and they don't make it any easier with the CD. (Listen to how fast it goes!)

Good book, not perfect though.
