Alfred's Drum Method, Book 1 Review

It's nearly comical to write a review of this book - - not because there's anything wrong with the book....simply because it's such a classic, it'd be like me writing a review of "War and Peace".

Every serious snare drum student (or nearly every serious one, at least) starts with this book. It's a must-have.Very slow and gradual in it's approach.Highly recommended.

This is a pretty fun rhythm book. Before I purchased this book, I was searching around for a book to improve on rhythmic skills. This is a good book to start off.

I need to mention that the accompanying CD don't come with the full track of every single rhythm presented in the book, but on every first rhythm pattern on every page.

I would definitely encourage music lovers, be it pianist, drummer, guitarist, etc..to purchase this book as it will definitely will improve your rhythm reading.

Rockin' Bass Drum Review

When it is time to learn to work that bass drum off the beat, then it is time to get this book!

Lombardo gives a number of two-bar patterns (many of which could easliy be called funk beats) involving bass, snare, hi-hat (on the 2 & 4) and ride.Below each pattern, he gives you the same two bars with just the ride and the bass, allowing you to focus on playing the bass off the eigth-note ride.the patterns become progressively harder, and your right foot become progressively better (and faster).

This was the 2nd "full kit" book I worked out of, and it did me wonders. If you are a beginner, it will do wonders for you as well!

The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson Review

The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson [Paperback]

This book was recommended to me by my jazz drumming teacher. It contains a way of using Ted Reed's Syncopation book that is very interesting.

It is an inspiring book, which really comprises a total concept for teaching and learning drums. Every drummer should have this book, I think. It is probably the one and only really essential drum exercise book I've seen. And yes, that is even including G L Stone's books.

If you want to learn to read rhythm notation this is a very good book to start with, you don't have to know anything about notation to use this book it teaches that from scratch.
The book starts with the Pulse and how tonotate it, goes on to, up and downbeat and then introduces time signaturesand then on to examples of 2, 3, 4, and 5 beats to the bar. The concepts ofsyncopations and changing meters are introduced and the how to divide thepulse in to two, three and four equal parts, or eight notes, triplets andsixteenth notes. He deals with the time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4and 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8.
It's a good book to learn both the basics ofrhythm and the basics of rhythm notation.
When you are through with thisbook you can the continue with his other book Rhythmic Training, and checkalso out the book by Gary Hess.

Primary Handbook for Snare Drum Review

Primary Handbook for Snare Drum [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You don't have to be a snare drummer in a marching band to benefit from the exercises in this book. All drummers have to know how to count rythym/beats and these exercises help develop that skill very well. I usually play with the book on my own first (so that I am considering notes and rests myself and figuring them out), then I play the same piece with the accompanying CD which are played at a good pace that challenges you to really be reading the music, but not so fast that you feel like you'll never get it. I like to find a piece that I can't play accurately all the way through the first time, then play it about 10 times with the CD, until I am playing it accurately. Then later I come back to that piece and see if I am still hitting it right. Anyhow, I strongly recommend the exercises in this book for drummers of all levels - coming back to the basics now and then even when you think you've got it down already just serves to strengthen your skills.

By the way, there are two versions of this book on Amazon, one with and one without the CD. It is definitely worthwhile to have the CD and it is not "cheating" to play along with it. You'll see that when you try to do it - it's just more like playing along with another drummer, which is great practice.

I have a growing library of drum books and this is one I come back to over and over.

BE FOREWARNED, THIS IS NOT A PLAY-ALONG!!!!
I was tremendously disappointed, I already have excellent recordings of big band tunes! This is labeled a "Play-Along" which would indicate music minus drums.Perhaps even like the Rock books in this series with one example track with drums and one performance track without drums. How hard would that have been!!!Really feel shisted by Hal Leonard on this one.ITS NOT A REAL PLAY-ALONG!Save your money and buy a great recording of one of the great old big bands!

John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (Mini Scores) Review

John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting for this book for thirty years. I missed it the first time around when it was published in the late 1970s. Luckily it has been reprinted.

It is fairly complex due to the nature of the music and the mini score notation. However, should you want to play some of John McLaughlin's music and or understand its structure this book is a good place to start.

The scores have been produced with a great deal of care. Most of the scores are laid out with the 'normal' early Mahavishnu Orchestra instrumentation (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, and violin). The scores seem to have been faithfully produced from the original recordings, and additional parts have been given where necessary. Useful key/mode guides for ad libbing have also been given.
