(More customer reviews)This is an extremely well-put-together anthology of writings about the Beatles, spanning their entire career as a group and then following each in their post-Beatles years.It includes most of the seminal reviews, interviews and articles about the Beatles from beginning to end (such as the Maureen Cleve/Lennon interview, the William Mann London Times reviews legitimizing the Beatles as serious musicians and songwriters, sections from the Playboy interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, excellent writing on the elusive George Harrison and his musical contributions by David Simons, and much more) and essays on why the Beatles still matter.

The book is set up in three distinct parts

I.Articles written during the Beatles years, in chronological order.
II. Articles written about individual Beatles post-Beatles, arranged by individual.
III.Articles and essays about the Beatles legacy.

I knew quite a bit about the Beatles before reading this book, but I learned much that was new and interesting that has heightened my appreciation of these fine musician/songwriters and their legacy.

(More customer reviews)This was the book that first taught me to appreciate Wagner's Ring cycle.Before reading this book, I had tried to watch the Met telecasts and listen to the music, but I confess that I actually found Wagner boring.Then, one year, my father gave me this small book as a Christmas present.
Since then, I have read and re-read the book, and listened to the operas over and over again.I have seriously considered becoming a collector of Ring recordings; I own the Bohm version recorded at Bayreuth, the Solti version and the Karajan version.I have gone from being indifferent to Wagner to being a Wagnerolater, and Father Lee's book is what set this off.
The book may not be of as much use to someone who is already well versed in Wagner scholarship, however it is an excellent introduction to the Ring cycle.It exposed me for the first time to the depths of Ring interpretation.It also ably explained Wagner's musical techniques and his historical context in ways that the layperson can easily understand.For understanding the various leitmotifs in the index, some musical training is helpful, but having a recording of the Ring by your side should help to make up for any deficiencies in this department.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in getting to know Wagner, and interested in understanding how he can weave such a spell over his audiences.This book opened my own eyes; it can do the same for you.

(More customer reviews)Based on the reviews so far, I bought this book from Amazon.com and received it yesterday. It was so gripping, I finished it that evening. After seeing films like THE PLAYER and talking to aquaintences who likepredictable movies with happy endings, I figured the big studiosdiscouraged original, thought-provoking films. But this book shows how theytry to rationalize it. I liked how Jack Mathews tried to be objective andshow both sides and I was amazed at the differences between LA and NYcritics and how they affect films. Talk about too many cooks in thekitchen!
Even if you don't think much of the film BRAZIL, if you loveinteresting films and want to know why it's rare to see one come out, readthis book. I'm sure Terry Gilliam isn't alone in his battles with studiosand critics. If you did like BRAZIL, you'll also get a glimpse of Gilliam'screativity with some of his storyboards, plus you get the entire script ofthe film with some annotations. After reading this book, I got a greatbehind-the-scenes look of not only how a film comes about, but how it getsmarketed to the public as well.

Film Noir Reader 4: The Crucial Films and Themes (Bk. 4) Review

(More customer reviews)As Alain Silver explains in the book's Introduction, "Film Noir Reader 4" is different in purpose from the previous Film Noir Readers. It focuses on key films and key themes, rather than attempting to be inclusive or comprehensive. In that spirit, Silver has included a few lists of the most important film noirs according to himself and others in the Introduction. "Film Noir Reader 4" contains 23 mostly modern essays, many apparently not previously published, presented in two parts. The paper the book is printed on is pure white, instead of the off-white of previous volumes, so the black-and-white stills look better.

Part I, "Case Studies", includes 12 essays on key films. The films discussed are: "Double Indemnity", "Detour", "The Big Sleep", "Out of the Past", "The Unsuspected", "Gun Crazy", "D.O.A", "The Big Night", "Kiss Me Deadly", "The Big Heat", "The Big Combo", and "Touch of Evil". Glenn Erickson's enthusiastic and insightful essay "Fate Seeks the Loser: Edgar G. Ulmer's Detour" is particularly interesting. The same can be said for Kevin Hagopian's study of "The Big Sleep" and Stephen B. Armstrong's history of "Touch of Evil". Both films were radically altered by recuts, with the result of making them nonsensical. These carefully researched essays explain what was changed and why.

Part II focuses on "Noir Themes", although I don't think that most of these can reasonably be called "key" themes. Eleven essays discuss a variety of themes that can be found or projected upon classic noir films, including psychodrama, images of women, noir antecedents, horror-noir, war noirs, left-wing politics in noir and crime films, hybrid noir-westerns, and noir title sequences. In other words, Part II is a catch-all. "Cat People", "Rancho Notorious" (in comparison to "The Big Heat"), and "Double Indemnity" are discussed in the most depth.

I'm giving "Film Noir Reader 4" a lower rating than I gave the previous Film Noir Readers, because it is overwhelmed by the sort of absurd ideological readings that I haven't heard this much of since I studied film in college. The reader can't get far without running into dogmatic -and, I might add, eternally ill-defined- terminology like "patriarchal capitalism" and "misogyny". For grown persons to legitimize their socio-economic hang-ups by deliberately misrepresenting 60-year-old movies is pitiful. I am reminded of the reason director Fritz Lang left Germany: The Nazi Party liked his films so much that they offered Lang the opportunity to run the German film industry. His films were anti-fascist. Anyway, there are some good, informative, essays in "Film Noir Reader 4", and it's useful to present different interpretations. But these aren't so different, and I get the impression of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

(More customer reviews)this book has chapters on some of the best songwriters of the era, ranging from the, more or less anyway, fairly well known ( like tim buckley and phil ochs)to the undeservedly obscure, like david ackles. these artists do vary in quality, but the stories are always at least interesting, and often fascinating. there are lots of fine pictures of the performers in the book as well,if anything the work is a little short. people who enjoy the writings of richie unterberger and vernon joynson probably will like this as well

Gibson Guitars 100 Years of an American Icon Review

(More customer reviews)Gibson has unleashed a propaganda piece on an unsuspecting audience of guitar freaks.By having their in-house historian write it and by publishing it themselves, Gibson has ensured that they retain complete editorial control over all of the content.Here's an example of the hypebole that is present throughout the book: in reference to the oncoming wave of solid body electrics Walter Carter writes, "...Gibson would lead rather than follow the pack as the electric guitar era began to take shape."I think Leo Fender would take exception to that statement if he were still around.The book features lots of well-known players with a Gibson in their hands.The captions border on outright fraud."Jimi Hendrix reached new guitar heights with an SG Custom."Gee, I thought that 99% of his playing was on a Fender Stratocaster."Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards plays a custom single-pickup L-55."Maybe he does in that picture, but any casual Stones fan will tell you that Keef plays a Tele.There are countless other examples of this type of misreprensentation.As much as I dislike that lame marketing approach, I completely despise the self-congratulatory chapter on the trio of Harvard guys who bought the company in 1986.I personally think they have done more to damage the image of Gibson in the eyes of players than Norlin ever did.They even went so far as to include a staged photo of Juszkiewicz between rounds in a boxing match with the caption: "Berryman and Zebrowski revive Juszkiewicz after a tough round in a negotiations course at Harvard business school."It's almost too much to stomach.

Having said all of that, the book is not completely without merit though.If you are a diehard Gibson fan and already own Duchossoir's essential book "Gibson Electrics - The Classic Years," then this book may make a nice, if somewhat trivial, addition to your collection of guitar books.

(More customer reviews)I received only the DVD.I don't know if I was supposed to receive a book or not.He spends a long time talking about tempo markings and what character each tempo marking indicates.You could learn this from a simple music dictionary.He mentions finger pedaling, which interested me a lot, but he only touches on the subject and gives absolutely no systematic treatment of it whatsoever.Nor does he give any systematic guidelines for foot pedaling.Ornaments are not mentioned.Neither are most score markings, including slurs and articulations.For much of the DVD he simply navigates through a few pieces, telling us superficial details about them as though we had never seen them before.It felt like an impromptu piano lesson.I would have liked to have seen him put more effort into actually helping the viewer become a better teacher and performer.He arranges for an expert dancer to take the stage to show dance influence.She comes out and does the gigue in silence.No music.Then he plays a minuet for a few seconds while she does the minuet.And I do mean *seconds.*And that is all we get.So much more could have been done.It felt like an opportunity wasted.Overall, Hinson's treatment of subjects in this DVD is just really, really superficial and disorganized.His performances of the musical examples are so insensitive they will make any high level musician wince.I sincerely wish I could put so little effort into something and manage to get it published.Wait, no I don't.

I don't know what the price of this item will be by the time the next customer reads this.My advice would be to purchase it if it's cheap and plan to skim it once, but don't go out of your way if you're looking for something excellent.This isn't it.

Prior to that, like most rock music listeners, I wouldn't have been caught dead with a Merle Haggard or bluegrass record. But Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, and company opened up my mind to the beauty and joy of country music.

I've witnessed the gradual elevation of former-Burrito, Gram Parsons, to immortal status over the last thirty-five years. In `Hot Burritos,' John Einarson with FBB co-founder, Chris Hillman, debunk the Parsons legend with a hard-hitting history of the pioneering country-rock band that puts the contribution of each member in proper perspective.

Is Chris Hillman's criticism of Parsons motivated by jealousy? Parsons's flamboyant personality and self-inflicted early demise gave birth to a legend that continues to grow with each passing year while Hillman's unparalleled contributions to country-rock go largely unrecognized in comparison. There's no doubt that Gram Parsons had flashes of brilliance throughout his short career with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and as a solo artist. Yet, he never had the discipline to realize the full extent of the gifts he was given. I agree with Hillman in that, although I tried and tried, I found nothing in Parsons's two solo albums to compare with his `Gilded Palace of Sin' songs except for `She.'

To serious Burrito fans, the slights to Hillman and the rest of the band members in the race to exploit the Parsons legend are glaring:

- Several books have been written about Parsons, but none about the Flying Burrito Brothers until now.

- The A&M 1976 release of "Sleepless Nights" is billed as Gram Parsons - The Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram solo on the cover.

- The A&M 1988 release of "The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers: Farther Along" includes not one song from the post-Parsons Burritos. The 'blue' album and the live "Last of the Red Hot Burritos" had a lot of great stuff, most of it better than the songs from `Burrito Deluxe.'

- The A&M 2001 "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers" includes no songs from the post-Parsons Burritos.

The Amoeba Record's 2007 "Gram Parsons With The Flying Burrito Brothers: Live At The Avalon Ballroom, 1969" gives Parsons headline billing and features a solo Gram on the cover.

`Hot Burritos' does much more than just put Parsons's contributions in their rightful perspective. The origins of the band and its ultimate ending are dealt with nicely. Each of the four albums is critiqued and there's a wealth of interesting information coming from first-hand interviews with former Burritos and associates. Similar to his other books I've bought, "Desperados: The Roots Of Country Rock," "Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life and Legacy of the Byrds' Gene Clark," and "There's Something Happening Here: The Story Of Buffalo Springfield," Einarson uses a plethora of primary sources to give a factual account of the Burritos.
