Assassins: Vocal Score Review

Assassins: Vocal Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This is, in my opinion, Sondheim's greatest musical to date. The score, although shorter than most of his, contains some of his wittiest lyrics: 'Or we'd have been left / Bereft / Of F.D.R.!', and some of the greatesttunes ('The Gun Song' is a personal favourite). Sondheim cleverly uses themarches of John Philip Sousa to evoke the ironic feeling of patriotism in atale about presidential assassins. He also pastiches the music of AaronCopland in many numbers. The combination of these styles and composersprovides a truly American atmosphere, which, when heard out of context makewonderful songs, but in context of the show carry a deeper underscore ofmenace. Whether you're intending to produce the show or you just want toown a piece of Sondheim history, this score is a must!

The music to Assassins is incredibly written. There's no doubt that it's Sondheim at his best. The unusual rhyming schemes and clever lyrics make this musical one of my favorites. You can't escape the underlying humor ofa musical about a bunch of U.S. presidential assassins. The music may be alittle difficult for beginners to play (or sing, for that matter), but ifyou're up for a challenge, I say definetely go for it!

The 16-Bar Theatre Audition: 100 Songs Excerpted for Succesful Auditions (Vocal Collection-Baritone/Bass) Review

The 16-Bar Theatre Audition: 100 Songs Excerpted for Succesful Auditions [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This is a great audition resource, as it not only has the songs already broken down into audition-ready length, but it also includes a wide variety. There are pieces from shows old and contemporary. And although some of the music goes a bit over 16 bars, this is generally nto a big deal. It's maybe two-four bars over. Directors are typically more concerned with your voice than PRECISE bar count. These selections keep it close, though.

For those who appreciate culture and classical music and yearn for a refreshing new performance, this DVD is worth owning, watching and sharing for years to come. Unfortunately, AMAZON's description of "actors" is wrong. Celia Cruz and others cited are not in the film. This award winning documentary/film is an enjoyable expression of a group of women who live in Cuba and play deligthfully well and cohesively. The Romeu Camarata provides us with an excellent example of the art of music and specifically, Cuban classical music. With very limited resources, the performers share their passion and devotion. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I have.

Ultimate Sing-Along Female Voice Broadway Divas (Book & CD) (Ultimate Vocal Sing-Along) Review

Ultimate Sing-Along Female Voice Broadway Divas [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I buy a lot of music books with accompaniment CD's because I like to be able to get to know a piece very well before I perform it. I bought this book hoping to learn a few new show tunes, but I was terribly disappointed. It's great if all you want to do is sing karaoke, but it's not good for learning a piece for a performance. There is no piano music, just the lead line, so you can't take the book to your accompanist and have him or her play it for you. Even more problematic is that the accompaniment (music) itself is just awful. If you're used to karaoke, you might be ok with this, but I found the accompaniment to be cheesy. Because I can't listen to the accompaniment (it's so annoying) and because the book doesn't contain the piano accompaniment, I don't think I'm going to use this at all. I was extremely disappointed.

Cabaret (Vocal Score) Review

Cabaret [Spiral-bound]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reviews by Mr. Church and Hailey Haven are not about this item (the Full Vocal Score), but about the Vocal Selections (as is stated). I agree completely with Mr. Church that the Vocal Selections from the film are pourly cut.

The Full Vocal Score however contains ALL the music from the stage show (original version, not the Sam Mendes revival in which three songs from the film were added), including Playouts, Changes of Scene, Entr'acte, Curtain calls and Exit music. Also it gives you the instrumentation of different musical layers. (Don't bother to "Look Inside TM" to see what I mean: this link brings you to the Vocal Selections which as I already pointed out is a completely different item). Furthermore: spiral bound, so it stays open on your piano!

Nevertheless there are two negative notes:
- only songs from the show (not Mein Herr, Maybe this time, Money-money)
- no chord symbols

If you only look for the songs (and ALL the songs with chords, both show ànd film) I'd recommend "The Complete Cabaret Collection - Author's edition". But then you miss all incidental music and notes about instrumentation.

So I (preparing and musically arranging a production of the whole show) settled for this solution: the Full Vocal Score with most of the music (204 pages of sheet music and only 4 pages of accompanying text!) and photocopying of the songs that are not in the original show (but in the film). Too bad there's no "Definitive Cabaret Collection" to suit every man's wishes...

Update June 2008: my show has been played 5 times to great succes and good reviews, especially praising the orchestra. This orchestra could only have played so good thanks to the arrangements, for which I have made thorough use of the Full Vocal Score I bought in November 2007. This item has helped me a lot!

Flower Drum Song (Score) Review

Flower Drum Song [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book many years ago and enjoyed so much that I have read everything I could find by Mr. Lee, and since then other Chinese American authors.
It is a shame that for so many years the book was rejected by young Asian Americans as being "too white face" or "Uncle Tom" as it is not so at all.C.Y. Lee was a Chinese immigrant and wrote of the society as he saw it at that time, which is not the way the younger generation, who did not live through the immigrant experience, want to see it.This is not unusual, many well schooled, well fed sucessful Americans do not want to know that their grandparents arrived in steerage with their belongings tied up in kit bag, unable to speak the language, and worked 18 hours a day in menial jobs so that their children could get ahead.
This is a poignant story of Chinese immigrant families in Southern California during the days of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the difficulty the young American-raised men had in finding a wife. They were not allowed to bring women in from China, and they were not permitted to marry non Asians.Because of the Communist takeover, many Chinese who had dreamed of returning home to China when they retired after working all their lives were unable to do so. The situtation created an artifically stressed society. The book has tragedy and sadness, as well as hope and joy.
My only criticism of the novel, and a mild one at that, is that it frequently reads like a play script, especially in the last chapter, where there is a lot of dialogue, followed by descriptions of the action which read like stage directions. It is possible that the novel was orignally intended to be a play.
Warning, possible spoiler:
The musical version of the book which was also filmed was very loosely based on the novel, in fact one of the major characters was created for the musical.Apparently this has been done again with the new version playing on Broadway.Readers expecting to find a printed version of the musical may be disappointed.

Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies (Applause Books) Review

Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ted Chapin was the luckiest 20 year old whoever lived. As a "production assistant" (unpaid gofer)for the new Broadway musical "Follies", he had the opportunity and good sense to record the making of one of the greatest musicals of that era."Everything Was Possible" covers the first rehearsals to the abysmal cast recording to what has happened to the people involved. Starting from pre production on, his narrative never gets stale. He tells of how Hal Prince, Stephen Sondheim and Michael Bennett pulled it all off.It wasn't always fun. They had to deal with a group of aging actors who found negotiating a raked stage dangerous and a lot of their vulnerabilites and insecurities.
The book will have significant impact on anyone who saw the show. I did not see it in New York but at the end of its Broadway run it was to go on a national tour starting in Los Angeles. With most of the original cast intact I sat center section at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles in September, 1972.
It was one of the most emotional roller coasters I have been on in the theatre. The tour ended two weeks later and "Follies" has seldom been revived.
All musical theatre afficionados will love Chapin's book.Thank you Ted for letting us see those "Beautiful Girls" one more time.

Having just read this so called biography, I am amazed at some of the comments from readers and reviewers alike. "Well researched"?"Well documented"? "Balanced"? Thebook is full of errors! There are blatant mistakes and distortions onvirtually every page!E.G.Page 15: Filignano is in the Molise region notAbruzzi. Page 37: The RCA contract was signed in February 1945 not October1944. Page 47: The apartment was not rent free. Lanza paid $75 per monthfor it.Page 219: Lanza and Di Stefano never met. I know Di Stefano. Theyonly spoke twice on the telephone.Need I go on? I have spent a lifetimeresearching the life and career of Lanza (the last 20 years working on abiography.)I cannot believe that Amadeus actually published this almostcompletely inaccurate book. As for Mr. Bessette, I don't know his motivesfor attempting this futile exercise, but the mere fact that he relied on AlTeitelbaum as his main source of information says it all.

I understand the author of this book was dying as he wrote it.I therefore hate to criticise it too severely, but the truth is, it should not have been published. It is full of factual errors, and absurd assertions, that anyone with a reasonable knowledge of musicals will spot quickly.

The editorial standards for books about musicals seem to be extremely low. This is far from the first book on the topic to be riddled with errors. Is it so hard to send a manuscript to someone with the knowledge to fact-check it?
