Ed Gerhard: The Guitar Songbook (Book & CD) (Acoustic Masterclass) Review

(More customer reviews)I learned Gerhard's version of "The Water is Wide" from an old Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine article, and was thrilled to discover this book.But here's what I found out when it arrived:(a) The CD that accompanies the book has almost no music on it.It is mostly a tutorial to help you with certain snarky technical issues in the individual pieces.Nothing wrong with that, but not helpful if you haven't heard the pieces and would like to know what you're working on in advance.(b) A couple of the pieces are written for use with a slide.(c) Most of the pieces require an unusual tuning.Dropped D tuning is not a big deal, but most of the others are more complicated than that. I wanted this music for performance purposes, and having to stop and tune extensively between pieces makes their use extremely inconvenient, unless you have two equivalent guitars and somebody to tune for you in between. If you know all this and still want the book, it's easy to read and contains both tablature and music notation.Gerhard's work is terrific.But if I had it to do over, I would have passed, based on the above limitations.

(More customer reviews)First of all, you will learn something new by anything Don Latarski produces.This man creates good music and great learning material.

Okay, I'm an experienced player and when I buy something I usually get things that will take me into new places.I can't really say this book is a HOW TO kind of book.Instead, I'll say that this book is full of ideas and that's the kind of thing I look for.

I really don't care to play like anyone else so I shun books that show me how to play in this person's style or that person's style.And this book doesn't do that.I think it will let you be you.Best of all, it has LOTS of ideas.You could probably find all the things in this book on the internet somewhere but you'd spend a long, long time finding it and even if you found it, unless you knew what it was, it would be useless.

If you have some chops and you are looking to get into blues, start here.Go page by page and let Don show you what's in the blues.And, so you know, there's more to the blues that three chords and five (maybe six) notes, and Don shows you lots of jumping off places for your own enjoyment or research.

Fingerstyle Guitar Review

(More customer reviews)Ken Perlman packs a gig bag-full of fingerstyle guitar into this book.While it definitely targets novice fingerstyle players, it is not a book for those just beginning to play the guitar.Although Perlman introduces tablature, he assumes the player can read standard notation and already has a good knowledge of the fingerboard.Also, because much of fingerstyle is based on movable chord positions, the student should have some facility negotiating between chords.
That said, the book begins by introducing the style of alternating bass and builds increasingly complex melodies and techniques over this basic pattern.The student will learn all the standard left hand techniques (hammer-on and pull-off notes, slides, graced notes, etc.) as well as some development of the right hand.Perlman's approach is to use individual songs to introduce each concept which keeps the learning process musical without being overly didactic.In my view, there are several points that elevate Fingerstyle Guitar above most other instructional books.First, Perlman selects great acoustic guitar music.If you like the simple yet wonderful style of Mississippi John Hurt, it's there within the first few pages.With about 40 songs in all, the blues, roots and Celtic tunes are great fun to play, and much of the credit goes to Perlman's arranging and writing abilities.I also like the way Perlman sets each song up, giving the student some context in regard to the composer, or the song's history.And finally, following each piece, Perlman focuses on specific measures in the song that may be problematic, such as fingering patterns in chord transitions or tricky syncopations.
While Fingerstyle Guitar starts from a very basic level, the pace of skill development is brisk.For example, open tunings are introduced barely half-way through the book.The tunes near the end of the book, such as Joplin's "The Entertainer", are definitely for the capable intermediate guitarist.Therefore, I would also recommend the book to anyone who has previous exposure to fingerstyle.
For the intermediate-to-advance level player, Perlman's Advanced Fingerstyle Guitar is an excellent companion book which follows the same basic format set-out in Fingerstyle Guitar.Centerstream Publications has done a good job in the clear presentation of text and notation for both books.I particularly like the use of archival photographs of musicians that begin each chapter.
Overall, you won't be disappointed with Perlman's approach to Fingerstyle Guitar.

Muddy Waters: Deep Bluescontains guitar transcriptions from 31songs performed and recorded by Waters and his sidemen from 1948's "ICan't Be Satisfied" to "Sad, Sad Day" off a 1981 session w/Johnny Winter.Studying these transcriptions has given me - a mediocreamateur - new insights into the varied styles of the famous sidemen likeJimmy Rogers and Buddy Guy and a newfound excitement in the discovery ofsome lesser-known and under-rated guitar gods.The transcription of EarlHooker's shimmering guitar on "You Shook Me" (1962) is aparticular treasure.

Mississippi John Hurt (Book & 2 CD's) (Stefan Grossman’s Early Masters of American Blues Guitar) Review

(More customer reviews)This book covers most if not all of Mississippi John Hurt's songs (26 songs total). This is essentially the same book as the older Stefan Grossman's Masters of Country Blues Guitar, The Music of Mississippi John Hurt, Edited by Aaron Stang. The two CDs are very high quality recordings of live performances, possibly not available elsewhere. Shake That Thing and Sliding Delta are included here. I've been unable to find MJH recorded version of these songs elsewhere. These recordings just by themselves are probably worth the price of the whole package. Songs are presented in tablature and standard music format. All the words for all the verses are present. The tablature is big and easy to read. There are several songs where the tablature transcriptions are just for the break.The parts that aren't tabbed out should be the easiest parts to figure out. Or, you can learn the break and just use that to accompany your singing. Again each song is represented, on a separate page, in standard music format, with the melody line and the cords noted. I wanted Coffee Blues spoon fed to me one loving spoonful at a time, in its entirety, so I'm a little disappointed that only the break was included as tablature. I'm sure that filling in the gaps will make me a better musician. That is the whole point isn't it?

Mel Bay Jazz Guitar Standards Chord Melody Solos (Book & CD) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a spiral bound book with 44 arrangements and 2 CD's. Two outstanding arrangements are 'Misty' and 'Summertime', each by a different arranger. I like 'Misty' for the innovationand 'Summertime' for the feeling. These are not the only good arrangements in the book, just my personal favorites. The recordings are bare bones for the most part utilizing just a miked up jazz guitar but there are a few exceptions with bossa nova rhythm sections.The only slight negative I've found is there are a few tunes that were arranged, performed and/or recorded poorly. One arranger for example tries to put chords to every beat of the melody he tackles which is redundant sounding and too difficult for even him to pull off. Dogmatically sticking to one discipline when combining other techniques might help is ridiculous. Another example is the arrangement of 'It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing' which sounds more like a funeral dirge than the uptempo, fun tune it was meant to be. The chord/melody format is probably wrong for this tune. The majority of the arrangements are however professionally competent to exceptional. 'Misty'(Rick Stone-arranger) to repeat uses interesting,(not run of the mill), chord voicings that change as the song progresses, quick change chords, counterpoint, ascending diads, some linear lines and more. Very nicely done I think ! You wouldn't need to add much to this one.

Great Jazz Standards Anthology for Guitar (Popular Jazz) Review

(More customer reviews)I have a couple books and the "Fretboard Roadmap" DVD from this author, (Fred Sokolow), and I love them but I found the arrangements and chord voicings in this book a bit off of what is common in Jazz Guitar.The arrangements are such that the chord voicings use quite a few open strings which in turn leads to some difficult to get to fingerings.It just didn't work for me.Sorry Fred!

(More customer reviews)A keyboard player I use to play with had an expression.Every time we'd comment about how difficult the music we were trying to play was he'd say "Yeah, but when you can finaly play it, think how good you'll be!"That's how this book will make you feel.

The material here is all advanced.It's amazing to me that a Leo Kottke tune is the easiest one in the book.You'll need to spend some serious practice time on this book, but once you do you'll open up your technique to a lot of new areas.This really is a good thing, there's tons of books out there for beginning players, but not nearly as many for the advanced musician.It's nice to see high quality materials at the upper end of the skill levels as well.

The CD is excellent and is worth listening to on it's own.The 12 songs on the CD are the actual recordings off of the artist's original album.I like to let the CD play while I drive so I can get the feel of the tune memorized before I start to learn it.

The tunes themselves tend towards the bluegrass end of things, although Tony Rice's tune has very much a jazz feel to it (it is, in fact, a Wes Montgomery song) and Russ Barenburg's song is more "Adult Contemporary".Everything else is pretty much foot stompin' bluegrass.Any one of those songs would be a great choice in a guitar contest at a bluegrass festival.Even if you don't learn teh entire song you'll still pick up a lot of cool riffs that you can add to your own solos.

If you're looking for a challenge and you're ready to work then you'll get a lot out of this book.And once you can play one or two of these songs, "Think how good you'll be."

Kenny Sultan: Guitar Blues (includes cd) Review

(More customer reviews)Kenny has done it again.Acoustic fingerstyle blues students have once again received some truly golden learning opportunities.

I don't know just how much credit I can claim, but I emailed Kenny a few years back and practically begged him to release a book that contained not just the framework of songs, but whole songs, including different chord voicings, fills and runs and turnarounds and essentially everything a student would need to know to play a song, instead of playing a basic 12-bar several times.

That's exactly what Kenny has delivered in this book.It's his top-drawer, grade-A material that he's sharing here.Not many performing artists would be willing to do that, I think.So I feel like we students owe him a debt of gratitude.

The material ranges from Lightnin' Hopkins-style blues to very tappy-toe ragtime, and it's all just a ton of fun to listen to, and to play.It's all in standard tuning, no slide involved.There are certain points where Kenny does something really difficult--a quick turnaround with 9th chords, for instance--where he provides reasonable alternatives (using 7th chords instead).Nice touch.He moves at a faster pace in this book than his previous books, but he's covering a lot more material, too.

I must say that I was a tad disappointed--irritated, even--when I discovered that the CD that comes with the book does not by any means contain all of the music in the book.Mostly, the CD covers the main themes in the songs.To hear everything, you have to order not one, but two of Kenny's other CD's, i.e., not instructional CD's, but his commercial releases.

But then I realized that it would take a lot to cover all of the material in the songs.Not to mention that there are probably copyright issues on reproducing entire songs, even if they are from Kenny's own CD's.And beyond that, if you add up the price of this book, and the two other CD's, and then you consider what a goldmine of terrific material you're getting, this is the bargain of the millennium.Excuse my hyperbole, but I've already picked up so many new things from this book, as I have from his other books, that I find it hard to speak calmly about Kenny's work.

Beginner students should be advised that this material is probably beyond them.There are always exceptions, of course.Some beginners are fiercely determined (not to mention more talented than I), and can tackle more challenging material.When I was starting to learn fingerstyle, this stuff would have simply killed me, and made me feel helpless.So in general, I think beginners are better off with Kenny's first two books.(The first is no longer in print, I think, but "Acoustic Blues Guitar" is, and it's excellent for beginners.)

In a way, working through this book has made me a little sad.I've come to realize that my own playing, and my own musical knowledge, have reached a point where soon I won't need books or ideas any more.Even as I started working on the first song, I immediately had alternate ideas that I started throwing in (many of which I learned from Kenny's earlier books).I've reached the point where I hear a run in my head that's different from Kenny's, and I can figure it out and work it into the song in place of something Kenny offers.So although I've never met Kenny, I feel nevertheless like this is almost the end of a personal relationship, because I've (nearly) outgrown the need for help with my playing.

I've bought maybe 200 guitar books over the years, a sizeable number of which are devoted to acoustic fingerstyle blues.Kenny's are not the only books that have helped me.But his outweigh all the others by a large margin.I can honestly say that, if it weren't for his book, "Acoustic Blues Guitar," I might have--probably would have--given up for good on fingerstyle.Now, five years later, I've reached the point where I'm ready to play open mics, and I can improvise at will on ragtime themes.(You just can't imagine what that means to your own soul until you actually do it for the first time.)I don't discount the importance of my own hard work and dedication in making that happen, but Kenny's help was also of fundamental importance.

This is not really a beginners book.Intermediate at least.For a great beginners book get "Traditional, Country, and Electric Slide Guitar" by Arlen Roth.That one will give a beginner "That Sound" right off the bat.

(More customer reviews)If you have fooled around with an acoustic guitar, learned a couple chords, and are a huge fan of the Delta blues styles of Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Mississippi Fred McDowell, then this is the book for you.I learned more from this book than I did from several years of private guitar lessons.
Roth shows you how remarkably simple it is to play bottleneck guitar once you have the basics down.He offers several scales and transcriptions of popular blues songs ("Come On in My Kitchen", "(I Believe I'll) Dust My Broom") that help you learn with minimal frustration.The accompanying CD is extremely helpful--you can learn only so much about music from words alone.He shows you how to play in all the alternate tunings, and when to apply the tunings to particular styles.He teaches you techiques for both acoustic and electric guitar.You also get the feeling that he's wants to teach you how to play not because he was commissioned to write a book, but simply because he loves the music.
Roth also includes a section on the country/bluegrass style of bottleneck.While my passion lies in the blues, I've learned a great deal from this section as well--particularly how to play lap style, and how to play those great southern gospel songs ("Will the Circle Be Unbroken?").
As with any musical instruction, you should approach this book with some creativity.For example, I prefer to use the slide on my ring finger, while Roth suggests you use your pinky.I think the ending to "Come On in My Kitchen" sounds better when played at the 12th fret, rather than the 5th.But once you get the basics down, you'll develop techniques that work best for you.From there, you'll be able to slap on a record of your favorite slide guitarist and by using what Roth has taught you, you can play right along with him!
I highly recommend this book to any casual guitar player with an interest in learning bottleneck.You may not become the next Robert Johnson or Dickie Betts, but you'll certainly impress yourself and your peers with your new guitar skill (which, between you and me, is surprisingly easy!!).
