(More customer reviews)I use this method book in my studio to teach students of all ages. Level 2 is for students who have mastered the basic chords and notes to the fifth fret.It offers a lot of music theory though I would like to see more applications for the theory, especially using intervals.
This book also comes with a CD (which isn't always offered on this site) which is very helpful.Like the first book, it covers a huge range of musical styles for guitar including classical, rock, country, folk, bluegrass, metal and introduces different modes and beginning improvization.The teacher's book has supplemental material as well as worksheets, tests (and does come with a CD) which would aid any student so it's not for teachers only.Read my review on the teacher's book.

Ed Gerhard: The Guitar Songbook (Book & CD) (Acoustic Masterclass) Review

(More customer reviews)I learned Gerhard's version of "The Water is Wide" from an old Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine article, and was thrilled to discover this book.But here's what I found out when it arrived:(a) The CD that accompanies the book has almost no music on it.It is mostly a tutorial to help you with certain snarky technical issues in the individual pieces.Nothing wrong with that, but not helpful if you haven't heard the pieces and would like to know what you're working on in advance.(b) A couple of the pieces are written for use with a slide.(c) Most of the pieces require an unusual tuning.Dropped D tuning is not a big deal, but most of the others are more complicated than that. I wanted this music for performance purposes, and having to stop and tune extensively between pieces makes their use extremely inconvenient, unless you have two equivalent guitars and somebody to tune for you in between. If you know all this and still want the book, it's easy to read and contains both tablature and music notation.Gerhard's work is terrific.But if I had it to do over, I would have passed, based on the above limitations.

Fingerstyle Guitar Review

(More customer reviews)Ken Perlman packs a gig bag-full of fingerstyle guitar into this book.While it definitely targets novice fingerstyle players, it is not a book for those just beginning to play the guitar.Although Perlman introduces tablature, he assumes the player can read standard notation and already has a good knowledge of the fingerboard.Also, because much of fingerstyle is based on movable chord positions, the student should have some facility negotiating between chords.
That said, the book begins by introducing the style of alternating bass and builds increasingly complex melodies and techniques over this basic pattern.The student will learn all the standard left hand techniques (hammer-on and pull-off notes, slides, graced notes, etc.) as well as some development of the right hand.Perlman's approach is to use individual songs to introduce each concept which keeps the learning process musical without being overly didactic.In my view, there are several points that elevate Fingerstyle Guitar above most other instructional books.First, Perlman selects great acoustic guitar music.If you like the simple yet wonderful style of Mississippi John Hurt, it's there within the first few pages.With about 40 songs in all, the blues, roots and Celtic tunes are great fun to play, and much of the credit goes to Perlman's arranging and writing abilities.I also like the way Perlman sets each song up, giving the student some context in regard to the composer, or the song's history.And finally, following each piece, Perlman focuses on specific measures in the song that may be problematic, such as fingering patterns in chord transitions or tricky syncopations.
While Fingerstyle Guitar starts from a very basic level, the pace of skill development is brisk.For example, open tunings are introduced barely half-way through the book.The tunes near the end of the book, such as Joplin's "The Entertainer", are definitely for the capable intermediate guitarist.Therefore, I would also recommend the book to anyone who has previous exposure to fingerstyle.
For the intermediate-to-advance level player, Perlman's Advanced Fingerstyle Guitar is an excellent companion book which follows the same basic format set-out in Fingerstyle Guitar.Centerstream Publications has done a good job in the clear presentation of text and notation for both books.I particularly like the use of archival photographs of musicians that begin each chapter.
Overall, you won't be disappointed with Perlman's approach to Fingerstyle Guitar.

(More customer reviews)The song selection is GREAT, but I would have bought this book just for Georgia On My Mind, which I obsessively practiced for three weeks straight.It is just now memorized and fluid under my fingertips after all this effort, so for me it was challenging (I've been playing classical guitar for about 35 years).Rhythmically, the arrangement is straightforward.There are a handful of difficult stretches, a sixteenth note run and lots of slides.Just enough ornamentation to keep things interesting and varied.It is very fun to play, and addictive!

A CD containing recordings of all the songs accompanies this wonderful book, which makes this also one of the best guitar music values of all time.

Bill Piburn rocks!(In a jazzy, classic way.)

Wohlfahrt's Violin studies work on almost every aspect of violin technique. If you are having a issue with your technique, find a lesson that works that same issue. Even the lessons that look simple have a lesson to be learned. The first lesson is a good example. Easy enough if you read music, but look at the many bowing variations.

These exercises are excellent, but you should have an instructor patiently helping you work though them. Take you time. Get it right. Don't rush. There is no audio CD recording available, but if you are having trouble with one of these studies, email me your concern. I'll try to help. No cost. I enjoy working on these.

(More customer reviews)A keyboard player I use to play with had an expression.Every time we'd comment about how difficult the music we were trying to play was he'd say "Yeah, but when you can finaly play it, think how good you'll be!"That's how this book will make you feel.

The material here is all advanced.It's amazing to me that a Leo Kottke tune is the easiest one in the book.You'll need to spend some serious practice time on this book, but once you do you'll open up your technique to a lot of new areas.This really is a good thing, there's tons of books out there for beginning players, but not nearly as many for the advanced musician.It's nice to see high quality materials at the upper end of the skill levels as well.

The CD is excellent and is worth listening to on it's own.The 12 songs on the CD are the actual recordings off of the artist's original album.I like to let the CD play while I drive so I can get the feel of the tune memorized before I start to learn it.

The tunes themselves tend towards the bluegrass end of things, although Tony Rice's tune has very much a jazz feel to it (it is, in fact, a Wes Montgomery song) and Russ Barenburg's song is more "Adult Contemporary".Everything else is pretty much foot stompin' bluegrass.Any one of those songs would be a great choice in a guitar contest at a bluegrass festival.Even if you don't learn teh entire song you'll still pick up a lot of cool riffs that you can add to your own solos.

If you're looking for a challenge and you're ready to work then you'll get a lot out of this book.And once you can play one or two of these songs, "Think how good you'll be."

Kenny Sultan: Guitar Blues (includes cd) Review

(More customer reviews)Kenny has done it again.Acoustic fingerstyle blues students have once again received some truly golden learning opportunities.

I don't know just how much credit I can claim, but I emailed Kenny a few years back and practically begged him to release a book that contained not just the framework of songs, but whole songs, including different chord voicings, fills and runs and turnarounds and essentially everything a student would need to know to play a song, instead of playing a basic 12-bar several times.

That's exactly what Kenny has delivered in this book.It's his top-drawer, grade-A material that he's sharing here.Not many performing artists would be willing to do that, I think.So I feel like we students owe him a debt of gratitude.

The material ranges from Lightnin' Hopkins-style blues to very tappy-toe ragtime, and it's all just a ton of fun to listen to, and to play.It's all in standard tuning, no slide involved.There are certain points where Kenny does something really difficult--a quick turnaround with 9th chords, for instance--where he provides reasonable alternatives (using 7th chords instead).Nice touch.He moves at a faster pace in this book than his previous books, but he's covering a lot more material, too.

I must say that I was a tad disappointed--irritated, even--when I discovered that the CD that comes with the book does not by any means contain all of the music in the book.Mostly, the CD covers the main themes in the songs.To hear everything, you have to order not one, but two of Kenny's other CD's, i.e., not instructional CD's, but his commercial releases.

But then I realized that it would take a lot to cover all of the material in the songs.Not to mention that there are probably copyright issues on reproducing entire songs, even if they are from Kenny's own CD's.And beyond that, if you add up the price of this book, and the two other CD's, and then you consider what a goldmine of terrific material you're getting, this is the bargain of the millennium.Excuse my hyperbole, but I've already picked up so many new things from this book, as I have from his other books, that I find it hard to speak calmly about Kenny's work.

Beginner students should be advised that this material is probably beyond them.There are always exceptions, of course.Some beginners are fiercely determined (not to mention more talented than I), and can tackle more challenging material.When I was starting to learn fingerstyle, this stuff would have simply killed me, and made me feel helpless.So in general, I think beginners are better off with Kenny's first two books.(The first is no longer in print, I think, but "Acoustic Blues Guitar" is, and it's excellent for beginners.)

In a way, working through this book has made me a little sad.I've come to realize that my own playing, and my own musical knowledge, have reached a point where soon I won't need books or ideas any more.Even as I started working on the first song, I immediately had alternate ideas that I started throwing in (many of which I learned from Kenny's earlier books).I've reached the point where I hear a run in my head that's different from Kenny's, and I can figure it out and work it into the song in place of something Kenny offers.So although I've never met Kenny, I feel nevertheless like this is almost the end of a personal relationship, because I've (nearly) outgrown the need for help with my playing.

I've bought maybe 200 guitar books over the years, a sizeable number of which are devoted to acoustic fingerstyle blues.Kenny's are not the only books that have helped me.But his outweigh all the others by a large margin.I can honestly say that, if it weren't for his book, "Acoustic Blues Guitar," I might have--probably would have--given up for good on fingerstyle.Now, five years later, I've reached the point where I'm ready to play open mics, and I can improvise at will on ragtime themes.(You just can't imagine what that means to your own soul until you actually do it for the first time.)I don't discount the importance of my own hard work and dedication in making that happen, but Kenny's help was also of fundamental importance.

The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking: How to Play the Alternating Bass Fingerpicking Style (Bk & CD) Review

(More customer reviews)Mark Hanson is considered to be amongst the top instructors today in the fingerstyle domain. He regularly holds fingerstyle workshops and has authored over 30 books and videos, all on the same subject - fingerstyle guitar. He has also interviewed several fingerstyle authorities such as Leo Kottke and James Taylor.

This book is considered by many as the leading fingerstyle instruction book. There are several very good reasons for the high number of votes Mark's books receive; and WHY you should buy this book.

1.Travis picking (alternate bass with melody) is the foundation of fingerstyle guitar. Nearly every fingerstyle guitarist from Rev. Gary Davis to Muddy Waters to Robert Johnson to Leo Kottke and Chet Atkins has used the Travis picking method. This book is the bible of Travis picking.

2.The book requires no knowledge of the instrument. I couldn't switch chords comfortably when I received this book. In fact I only knew the C and G chords. With some patience and determination I learnt more than 30 chords by the time I was at the end of the book, and obviously I also learnt to switch between them effortlessly.

3.Mark lays out very logical examples throughout the book to ensure you are progressing the right way. There is a practice song after every chapter to make certain you are comfortable maintaining the rhythm and will face no difficulty if you encounter a similar pattern in any other song outside of the book. The instruction is very clear and there is absolutely no ambiguity even for a novice. It's almost like the author is holding your hand throughout. I am no dazzling guitarist (read no natural flair) and had no teachers while I was using this book. I waded through it without any major hold-ups. There is also a CD included where Mark plays the pieces at both half and full speeds. If you have heard `Dust in the Wind' by Kansas; after only a week with this book you'll be able to play that song, albeit not at performance speed.

4.The book has a sequel; the Art of Solo Fingerpicking. The sequel is for intermediate/advanced fingerpickers only. The sequel ensures you get to learn the most complex fingerpicking techniques, including breaking out of pattern playing (i.e. Travis Picking). Once you have mastered both the books playing fingerstyle guitar in any genre (blues, jazz, classical, country, folk etc.) will be unchallenging. Of course this is not easy and will take time; but the results will leave you fulfilled.

5.Mark is a wonderful person. I had a query regarding the use of thumbpicks and fingernails and shot him a mail. He immediately replied back and addressed the query in detail. It's nice to know you can repose faith in the author/instructor and he is there to tackle any issues you have. Further, he runs a website accentonmusic.com which carries articles on fingernails, amplification of acoustic guitars, contemporary music, newsletters, etc. all of which are really useful. There are tons of resources on the web, but only so few are reliable. Also, it's tough to judge an author by a single book. Every book of Mark is really enjoyable and he has a truckload of material to offer. I was a big zero with music theory and Mark has promised to write a book on that (he's graduated in Music). Can't wait to get hold of it.

6.I own as many as 8 other `bestselling' fingerstyle books for beginners and intermediates and a few videos too. Only one book comes anywhere close - Beginning Fingerstyle Blues - by Arnie Berle. Even that one does not specify how many fingers to use, right hand position, thumbpicks or not etc. You will certainly require answers to these once you take the plunge. Fortunately Mark's book takes good care of the reader here. His passion for fingerstyle is contagious.

When you buy an instruction book, the most important investment you make is your time. You don't want to follow an instruction book devotedly for 6 months only to realise there is a better book out there; it leaves you in self-doubt and may hinder your progress. You will never be in a quandary with this book. Very few books have information pouring out of every page. Such books are priceless and will stand the test of time. The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking is one such book. Written in 1986, it works wonders even today - nearly 20 years later.

If fingerstyle guitar eludes you, buy or borrow this book. I promise you will be grinning ear to ear after carrying out the instructions. It's easy, many have done it, and so can you!

(More customer reviews)I bought this book after having learnt 'Don't Think Twice' from a magazine and was very disappointed with the transcriptions.'Don't think twice' was a very poor representation; even a averageguitarist would be able to see it was quite far off the recorded version.Another problem was the lack of good songs - Fantasic fingerpicking pieces were missed out:'Spanish Boots', 'Girl from north country', 'One too many mornings', etc did not feature.Also no words were included.

The music from the Pink Guitar CD (Henry Mancini : Pink Guitar) is amazing and should be purchased on its own merit. If the music from the Pink Guitar CD inspires you to learn those arrangements, then this book is for you. It would be almost impossible to learn any of the pieces in this book without owning the retail Pink Guitar CD for guidance as the accompanying CD to this book focuses on the artists' comments and teachings on playing their respective arrangements.

Although most tab guitar books are focused at introductory lessons, this book is quite a bit more advanced and should be enjoyable for higher level acoustic guitar players. Beginner players may find many of the pieces outside of their range.

(More customer reviews)Happy Traum is probably my favorite guitar instruction author.He's clear, he always starts with the basics and builds up gradually, and his books always include an interesting and appropriate repertoire.This one is no exception.
In addition to learning fingerpicking guitar technique and a collection of classic songs including (but not limited to) Make Me a Pallet, John Henry, Spike Driver's Blues, Nine Pound Hammer and Sitting on Top of the World, the reader is treated to paragraph length thumbnail sketches (including photograph) of interesting and influential folk guitar players of the twentieth century, such as Mississippi John Hurt, Sam Chatmon, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, and more. These sketches are like crumbs on the forest floor that the reader can follow to a better appreciation of folk music generally and fingerpicking in particular.
The only thing that would improve this book would be an accompanying CD.

Beginning Fingerstyle Arranging & Technique for Guitar (Book & CD) Review

(More customer reviews)This book is a very good book - BUT for music theory NOT for arranging.

I thought that with this book I would be able to listen to a song I liked and then have the tools to figure out how to arrange it to be played on the guitar.That the book would show me how to listen to a song and then figure out what key it is in, whether I needed to add a baseline and what type, what kind of finger picking I should do, how I should play the chords or just appregiate them, and so on.

Instead, this book is about fingerpicking -in general-.Its about keys -in general-.Its about I-IV-V chords -in general-.

I have no more ability to arrange anything after reading this book than I did before.

Now if somebody had no idea about music theory AT ALL I would say this is a fine book, great even.But there are lots of fine books on music theory.

And if you like what it says about finger picking and Travis picking I would ask "Why is this listed as accompanying their fingerpicking series of books 1 through 3 then, don't they cover fingerpicking?"Yes they do obviously, so its a rehash in this book.

Soooo, if you want to become a composer of music and able to take a song you like and make a version of it for the guitar then forget it, this book is not for you.

Unless you're the type that can take a book of grammar and from it know how to become a writer.

(More customer reviews)Mark Hanson has done a fine job of arranging the original orchestrations for fingerstyle guitar.Some of it is approachable by the advanced beginner; intermediate guitarists should find their efforts rewarded with a fun little repetoire which offers room for musical expression.(There are some fairly tricky harmonics.)The more advanced guitaristcan develop a suite with much charm and a great deal of humor.
Mark's study notes anticipate most technical problems the student will encounter.It would have been helpful if they were printed with each piece instead of in their own section.As usual, the CD is a great study aid.CDs with music books are the greatest thing since the pull tab. Oh, and I wish they'd printed Yip Harburg's wonderful lyrics somewhere.In TAB and standard notation.
