Michael Caine - Acting in Film: An Actor's Take on Movie Making (The Applause Acting Series) Revised Expanded Edition Review

Michael Caine - Acting in Film: An Actor's Take on Movie Making Revised Expanded Edition [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

If you like movies, this book is a great read. If you're interested inacting in movies, it's an essential read. If you're interested inmoviemaking (behind the camera), it's still an essential read: buy extracopies to pass around on the set, especially if you're a strugglingfilmmaker and you have a cast of friends who've never acted before.
As ateacher, Caine is as straightforward as he is as an actor. You watch hisperformances and you're seeing an actor who understands that less is more.You read this book and you're listening to an instructor who understandsthe same thing. Every anecdote he tells about films he's been in and starshe's worked with is not just namedropping, it's ALWAYS relevant to whateverhelpful point he's making about the craft of film acting. And to him it isvery much a craft, not an art. The art takes care of itself; it happensmysteriously, but it can only happen if you nail the craft first. Noarty-flighty book about acting theory or the Method, this is aworking-class, meat-and-potatoes manual that anyone can relate to, muchlike its author.

Acting in Film (2002) Review

Acting in Film

For a student of film acting, this DVD is a rare chance to get good, solid, practical advice from a successful working actor.Mr. Caine presents information in a down to earth and entertaining way to both a panel of students and a studio audience.

My only complaint is that it should have run longer than 1 hour.I realize that the production was bound by the restraints of the television series, but as a DVD release more could have been included.

Highly recommended as is Mr. Caine's companion book 'Acting In Film'.

Pearl by pearl he lays out the Caine wisdom on everything from set politics to set decorum, the film bureaucracy and more!A treasure ... I'm not going to look at performances quite the same way ... A grand entertainment with more drama than most movies ... He's a marvelous teacher ... A real clear-cut lesson that every critic should see and everbody who goes to the movies should see... - Gene Siskel, Siskel & EbertI watched the video and had my doubts ... If there is a required text for the oboist, the Barret Method is it.The etude studies are a standard part of the repertoire for students of all levels, and have been reproduced in other method books as well.I do not know of an oboist who has not worked from this book.Every student has their own favorite exercise and etude, and all learn to live with the yellow volume.While it can seem oppressive at times, the preparation it provides is second to none.It is a must-have for an obosits at any level.

Scale Pattern Studies For Guitar, Supplement 3: Classic Guitar Technique Review

Scale Pattern Studies For Guitar, Supplement 3: Classic Guitar Technique [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is awesome. It was first introduced to me by an accomplished classical player, but I'm a metalhead and I love it. It covers all the keys, all over the neck, with lots of great sight reading exercises and drills that are designed (and well designed) by a guitar player for the guitar. Also, there's text about how to go about playing the book, and I can testify personally that if you follow his method, you will quickly learn a lot about the guitar. This is not some hackish "we have cataloged every possible combination of notes on the guitar and therefore we are awesome" book. This is quality advice and teaching from a real player. I have played guitar for over 15 years, in lots of different environments, including studying classical guitar in college with professionals and touring with death metal bands. I can't think of a serious player that I wouldn't recommend this book to (and most of them know about it already).

Bluegrass Guitar Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know (Series 1) 6 CD (Homespun Learning Discs) Review

Bluegrass Guitar Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know 6 CD [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product description doesn't do this justice.This is a terrific resource if you want to flatpick fiddle/bluegrass/OT tunes.There are 20 standard tunes.Each has the following 4 parts laid out in notation and tab

1.A beginner's version;
2.An intermediate version;
3.An advanced "hotrod" version worthy of a contest;
4.An ending that can probably also be used to end any other tune in the same key, so it's very versatile.

It's recommended you work through all the beginner versions before going onto the intermediate; it'll take you several months do that.

The CDs walk you through each tune, though I'm not big on CD instruction.Nevertheless, the CDs also have a full speed version of each tune where Steve plays through all three versions (and then repeats the beginner version).I found that putting all 20 fullspeed versions on a CD makes its own great CD and is a good way to "get the songs in your head."

Here are the songs on Vol. 1:Ragtime Annie; Bill Cheatham; Gold Rush; Flop-Eared Mule; Forked Deer; Old Joe Clark; Soldier's Joy; Nothing To It; Red-Haired Boy; Salt Creek; Big Sandy River; Billy In The Low Ground; Under The Double Eagle; Fisher's Hornpipe; Blackberry Blossom; Turkey In The Straw; St. Anne's Reel; Arkansas Traveler; Sweet Georgia Brown; Whiskey Before Breakfast

All that's just to give a worthy description.As for my take on it all -- terrific.I was a beginner flatpicker and at first it took some time to get a song under my belt.As I've progressed it takes less time and it's just plain fun to learn good arrangements to standard tunes.And I've still got the intermediate and advanced versions to learn!Just a terrific resource for great tunes.I'm through the beginner versions and am half way through Volume 2 (same set up; same quality).

Complete Piano Sonatas Review

Complete Piano Sonatas [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This edition of Scriabin's piano sonatas is another bargain from Dover, with clear print and sturdy binding.Their source is a reprint of a Russian edition, published in Moscow (1964), and not editions that date back to the composer.I mention this because there seems to be a misprint in the "Funebre" movement of Sonata No. 1: compare m. 5 on page 23 with the third measure from the end on page 24 -- the passages are otherwise identical, but the left hand on the third beat is different (although harmonically acceptable).One is likely incorrect.That said, Ashkenazy and Laredo play it as written, so who knows?Finally, to the reviewer who wondered if the Sonata No. 1 is complete -- it is.The "missing" movement from the Contents page (the "Funebre" mentioned above) begins on page 23.It's all there.

Al Di Meola's Picking Techniques (Instructional) Review

Al Di Meola's Picking Techniques [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book told me more about "Profit Techniques" than picking techniques. Practically all of the material is excerpted from the (mostly excellent) transcription book "Words, Music, Pictures", and not even presented in a very logical context. The few sentences that specifically deals with picking, are just general remarks that aren't very helpful in the practical sense. From a picking wizard such as Al, I'd expected some killer exercises and top-notch advice, but this book was probably hastily assembled to capitalize on his name (I doubt he had much input on it at all). Nothing wrong with the transcription excerpts, except that they aren't really right-hand etudes, and you can get the full versions in the other book (WMP).

Advanced Concepts (Manhattan Music Publications) Review

Advanced Concepts [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This great book by the co-chair of New York's Drummers' Collective, Kim Plainfield, is a well-organized excursion into more advanced drumming concepts.With sections on incorporating rudiments into fills, building limb independence through linear grooves and world rhythms, and numerous suggestions for using basic "source rhythms" as launching pads for soloing or grooving ideas, Plainfield's book will likely broaden your drumming horizons, as it has mine.The book comes with two CDs in which Plainfield demonstrates the various techniques and exercises, and at the same time displays his remarkable drumming skills.

The book is intended for serious players who yearn for greater skill--so, while intermediate players will likely find more immediate applications of the book's contents, relative beginners who are willing to think should find the book helpful in generating ideas beyond commonplace Rock figures, while more advanced players may discover some new perspectives on various techniques and feels.Advanced Concepts ably points the way to more intelligent, smoother, eye-opening drumming, and will aid any drummer in becoming a much better musician.

Speaking of correcting misinformation, this is definitely *not* the Paderewski edition. The Mikuli and Paderewski editions are certainly not the same, although if you look in the commentary in the back of any Paderewski Chopin score, you will find that the Mikuli is one of the many sources that were consulted for the Paderewski.

Dover used to publish a reproduction of the Paderewski edition years ago, and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, they no longer seem to do so.

Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies are challenging, demanding pieces. Ideal for those of you who are advanced/experienced professional pianists.
