Collected Thoughts on Teaching and Learning, Creativity and Horn Performance Review

Collected Thoughts on Teaching and Learning, Creativity and Horn Performance [Hardcover]

Douglas Hill is one of my mentors--a great player, a master teacher, a kind person, and a strong analytical mind.He is a terrific diagnostician and a healer of horn problems, and I have grown by both his example and his teaching. In this book, he shares his thoughts about several different subjects relating to playing the horn, and gives the possibility of moving through those nasty "stuck" places in one's technique.Unfortunately, the student who borrowed my copy has not returned it (and I can't remember who has it), so I am ordering another.

The Allen Vizzutti Trumpet Method, Book 1 (Technical Studies) Review

The Allen Vizzutti Trumpet Method, Book 1 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

The book opens with a few useful tips in the front for warming up properly and how to pace your practice routing. That's followed by page after page of mind-numbing drills. I was hoping for more insights (tips and contemplations) from one of the premier trumpet players today. Come on, Mr Vizzutti. Talk to us. At least give us some cool etudes to practice and enjoy, which incorporate your techniques. Take a page out of Arban's and Clark. Can anybody suggest to me a comprehensive and fun technical study for an intermediate to advanced student?

The World of Jazz Trumpet: A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy (Book) Review

The World of Jazz Trumpet: A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally: a single volume devoted entirely to the art and players of jazz trumpet, rather than having it hide in the more generalized chronicles of jazz history! Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter and composer Scotty Barnhart is the perfect author for his definitive guide: he's the featured soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra and has performed with many greats over the decades. This isn't just a history of the instrument's development: it's a survey of its musical, social, political and economic heritage charting its evolution through major contributors, blending in the insights and perceptions of fellow jazz trumpeters who share their stories and philosophies. Any interested in jazz in general or jazz trumpet in particular must have THE WORLD OF JAZZ TRUMPET: A COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY & PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY.

Product Description:
In The World of Jazz Trumpet - A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy, acclaimed jazz trumpet soloist Scotty Barnhart examines the political, social and musical conditions that led to the creation of jazz as America's premier art form. He traces the many factors that enabled freed slaves and their descendants to merge the blues, gospel, classical marches, and African rhythms to create a timeless and profound art that, since its inception, circa 1900, continues to have a major impact on all music. The World of Jazz Trumpet is a must-have study of the jazz trumpet for students, instructors, and professional musicians, as well as for anyone who appreciates the genre. Readers will appreciate Barnhart's personal and professional connection to a major part of American and world history. This book fills a major void in the world of jazz education as well as in general music education. With entries on 800 trumpeters, it is destined to become required reading in thousands of colleges, schools and homes around the world.

John Coltrane Solos: Soprano and Tenor Saxophone (Artist Transcriptions) Review

John Coltrane Solos: Soprano and Tenor Saxophone [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many transcriptions of Coltrane's solos floating around out there. For professional saxophonists, writing down these solos is like taking a graduate course in jazz studies. The work presented here, along with the accompanying special fingerings and notes makes this the absolute best compilation on the market for aspiring and even professional musicians.Although written for (and played on) tenor, these lines can be applied to any instrument.I have played along with the original recordings with these transcriptions, and they are meticulously correct. To get the most out of the experience, I recommend using the book like an answer key and trying to transcribe the solo yourself first. You will be absolutely stunned at what this does for your understanding of jazz, Coltrane, and music in general.

Jazz Improvisation 4: Contemporary Piano Styles Review

Jazz Improvisation 4: Contemporary Piano Styles [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the last in a series of four volumes created between 1959 and 1965 by jazz pianist and instructor John Mehegan. The complete set is of the utmost historical importance for anyone with a serious interest in jazz piano. Before Mehegan, no other author had succeeded in unlocking themysteries of jazz piano and then communicating them to a mass audience in aclear and cogent manner.
Volume 4's "contemporary" stylesinclude such jazz giants as Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver and Bill Evans. In Mehegan's view, these three were the primary architects of modern jazzpiano.
At the very beginning of the book is a note-for-note transcriptionof Bill Evans' classic "Peri's Scope." Serious jazz pianostudents will want to memorize or "cop" this performance in itsentirety, since it encompasses so many of Evans' stylistic innovationswithin one comparatively short space.
The "meat and potatoes"foundation of this volume is the series of chord-like clusters Meheganrefers to as "A" and "B" voicings. One set of voicingsderives from Chopin, the other from Ravel. For accompaniment or"comping," these are played in the right hand with single bassnotes or "root seven" intervals played in the left. For soloing, they are played in the left hand.
This volume goes on to describemelodies voiced in "block" chords as developed by pianist GeorgeShearing, and then outlines a solo piano architecture based on the A and Bvoicings [arguably prescient, anticipating the solo piano renaissance thatoccurred during the '80s].
The book's primary flaw -- one which persiststhroughout the serie -- is its unfortunate allegiance to the concept of"figured bass" used within traditional music theory instruction.Indeed, there is a conspicuous overall effort throughout the series to"suck up" to academia, but this is a forgivable byproduct of anage when traditional academia persisted in viewing jazz as something toovulgar and intellectually impovershed to merit acceptance within hallowedacademic environs. -- Cortland Kirkeby

The Art of Jazz Trumpet is by far the best book on the subject I have seento date. The exercises sound incredibly hip and were challenging to play. The ideas for playing over chord changes have totally changed my conceptionof the horn. The history of trumpet is also fascinating, and McNeil's takeon influences is truly unique. I highly recommend this book.

Trumpet Fingering Chart (Amsco Fingering Charts) Review

Trumpet Fingering Chart [Sheet music]
Average Reviews:

The chart is excellant, helpful and descriptive, it shows what to do with your instrument to use for the note that you require such as all three fingers down for a Bb Trumpet to get a b note, can use for cornet and others also, all on one chart - great concept. Can be placed on the wall so that your child can use it to understand how to play first time instrument. I bought this product for my son who is 11 and he can understand what he needs, he is a first time learner and will learn more as he understands the notes. So this item will continue with him as he learns more.
I must say that the packaging from Amazon is the best, all books come with air wrap and in a box to fit so that the books etc.., are not damaged in anyway. The service is impecible and the communication is the best ever. I am completely satisfied with all their products I have purchased.Amsco Trumpet Fingering Chart (Amsco Fingering Charts)
