Play Alto Sax Today Beginner's Pack: Book/CD/DVD Pack [Paperback]

I was completely new to music.I have always wanted to learn to play the sax and I bought several books to get me started. This set has been invaluable to me!I am learning the notes.I am learning the basics of music. The coolest part is that when I am "confused" (which is often) it came with an audio CD to help me hear what the song I am currently mutilating is *really* supposed to sound like! The DVD helps show proper posture while playing, care for the sax, etc.I admittedly have only watched it a couple of times...it is helpful, but not the most-used part of the set, for sure!

Hot Rock Sax - Techniques, Licks And Effects (Artist Transcriptions) Review

Hot Rock Sax - Techniques, Licks And Effects [Paperback]

I never thought that I would need to write a negative review - that is, until now.If you are looking to add to your repertoire of techniques - don't make the same mistake I did in buying this book.
The techniques offered in this book have very little (if any) good information to offer - there are plenty of instances of this throughout the book.
As one example, the section on "Vibrato", provides no tips, no exercises, in fact - no description of what good vibrato is or how it is done.
Another example, the section on "Growl", has content so thin that it leaves the reader "out in the cold".The author offers only one (of several) techniques for growling, but that description is inadequate at best for the production of growl.
I could go on (check out the section on "glissando"), but let me just say that the author and publisher are doing a disservice to sax students with this book.
We should expect that any decent music "how-to" book should include good descriptions (with illustrations), tips (and/or warnings), and exercises - perhaps even recorded examples.Sorry - this book doesn't measure up.

Best of Kenny G: Soprano, Alto, and Tenor Saxophone (Artist Transcriptions) Review

Best of Kenny G: Soprano, Alto, and Tenor Saxophone [Sheet music]

Friends, I am sure you like Keeny G just like I do. I bought this book to study, dreamed about one day I could play saxophone like him. When the book arrived, the notes were extremely complicated! It's impossible to play it with saxophone. I wondered what happen; several minutes ago, I finally realized that it was for piano, not for saxophone!

Come on, Amazon and sellers, why don't you just add 2 words: "for piano" so that I wouldn't waste my money to buy a useless music book? Or, you just want to confuse buyers to make some money for your business?

Friends, if you want to buy music book, make sure you zoom in the pictures and read the tinny words really close, otherwise you might waste money to buy junks home.

Improvising Jazz Sax (Saxophone) Review

Improvising Jazz Sax [Paperback]

This is really a good book on jazz improvisation for saxophone. The book starts out with a brief introduction of chords and their chord symbols. All of the scales and patterns described in the book are written out in all of the keys except for the enharmonically spelled keys.A big plus for this book is that there is a section that describes how to play the special effects sound on the saxophone, like microtonics, growls, harmonics, etc.It gives specific fingerings for them. Now, there may be additional fingerings. It's just that I've seen no other sax book describe these. This book clearly illustrates the styles of some of our most famous saxophone players including Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Jr. Walker to name a few.I think this helps in understanding what we are hearing when we hear their music. The author also describes how to perform the chordal and scalar passages and sound musical by using different types of articulations. He also talks about the challenges of practicing and learning improvisation of which I think is important to talk about.Because sometimes as a musicians we need motivation as to why we are practicing everyday when we don't see immediate results. It's reality to understand that it takes months of practicing before one can get a real handle on certain musical expressions.
Each chapter has a new style of improvisation with music pattern. This book is not an end all to improvisation but is certainly a good start for any sax player who wants to improve his or her improvisational skills.

This is a nice collection of both contemporary and classical pieces. I could have done with a few less Beatles songs, especially those that don't work well for Saxophone (e.g. St. Pepper), but otherwise it's fun to play. Level is easy to medium.
