I bought the book to be used as the text for a college class. Many good MIDI books are out there, but this one is the best from what I've seen.MIDI has not changed much over the last decade however computers have. It is therefore very important to use the newest text on the subject.Written in a straight forward manner, good aspects to MIDI are conveyed.Latest equipment is mentioned, good resource.

"SWASHBUCKLING" is a well thought out, easy to understand book (lots of clear, step-by-step pictures help). Anyone interested in theatrically-oriented swordplay should buy a copy. As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing," "The Inner Game of Fencing," "The Encyclopedia of the Sword;" and the editor-in-chief of "Fencers Quarterly Magazine," I recommend this book.

The Battle of Brazil: Terry Gilliam v. Universal Pictures in the Fight to the Final Cut (The Applause Screenplay Series) Review

The Battle of Brazil: Terry Gilliam v. Universal Pictures in the Fight to the Final Cut [Paperback]

Based on the reviews so far, I bought this book from Amazon.com and received it yesterday. It was so gripping, I finished it that evening. After seeing films like THE PLAYER and talking to aquaintences who likepredictable movies with happy endings, I figured the big studiosdiscouraged original, thought-provoking films. But this book shows how theytry to rationalize it. I liked how Jack Mathews tried to be objective andshow both sides and I was amazed at the differences between LA and NYcritics and how they affect films. Talk about too many cooks in thekitchen!
Even if you don't think much of the film BRAZIL, if you loveinteresting films and want to know why it's rare to see one come out, readthis book. I'm sure Terry Gilliam isn't alone in his battles with studiosand critics. If you did like BRAZIL, you'll also get a glimpse of Gilliam'screativity with some of his storyboards, plus you get the entire script ofthe film with some annotations. After reading this book, I got a greatbehind-the-scenes look of not only how a film comes about, but how it getsmarketed to the public as well.

A Killer Life: How an Independent Film Producer Survives Deals and Disasters in Hollywood and Beyond (Limelight) Review

A Killer Life: How an Independent Film Producer Survives Deals and Disasters in Hollywood and Beyond [Paperback]

As an aspiring producer, I have long looked up to the indie queen Christine Vachon, and I was interested to read this book after having read her excellent SHOOTING TO KILL.I read that book when I was back in college, but this book is better. It's definitely more personal - in a way it reads like a memoir.

You feel like you are going through all the trials and tribulations with her. There's a lot of exciting stuff here - she battles the MPAA over Boys Don't Cry -- the bond company takes control of Far From Heaven-- shehas interactions with big stars like Jude Law and Julia Roberts.
I have never been to Sundance, but Vachon's Sundance diary takes you through that festival with her.

All this makes for a book that's immensely readable; I couldn't put it down.I really liked the spotlights from other industry figures, agents, studio heads and directors like John Cameron Mitchell (who did my favorite film, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH!)If you are in the industry, want to learn about the industry or are just plain curious about how movies get made, go out and get this book now!

Sword Fighting: A Manual for Actors and Directors (Applause Books) Review

Sword Fighting: A Manual for Actors and Directors [Paperback]

As a regular practitioner of Historical European Martial Arts I am usually the one cringing in the back row of the theatre or movie house, shelling out brutal insults at the lack of historical accuracy and good martial sense that is not seen in the vast majority of films and plays. I also have been working in the film and theatre community as both an actor and fight choreographer- so I understand both sides of the coin.
On the whole the book isn't too bad. It's refreshing to see these guys recognize that there are historical manuals and that they contain the real way to use these weapons. I had a few issues with some of the techniques. Avocation of an edge-to-edge parry (though the majority of them are flat to flat or edge to flat- the proper way, especially with longswords and medieval cutting blades). I really think their sword and buckler should be re-evaluated. Find a copy of MS I:33 and study that. Their interpretation of gripping the smallsword is off from a number of historical documents (see McBane, for instance). One of the bigger things I was surprised to see is that they did not show the use of the empty off hand as a parrying device for rapier and smallsword.
The book itself really does not teach you how to use these weapons. It rather shows you a step by step example of a small fight scene with them. I would really like to see more time spent on the various guards and methods of use. Some are present in the scenes they display, but far, far too many are left out.
I think this is a step in the right direction for anyone interested in pushing for more historical accuracy in film and theater. However I feel this is no where close to what could be done. Lots of room for improvement but not too bad overall.

I wasn't at all impressed with this book. If you want to know what gear Misstress Barbara uses or if you want to read yet another authors version of "the history of electronic music" then this is for you!

Me, well I sent it back. I had the book less than an hour and I'd already re-packed it up to ship back.

If you want a good reference book for electronic music then go pick up the 'Dance Music Manual: Toys, Tools and Techniques' by Rick Snoman. Now Snoman's book is an 'essential reference', seriously.
