(More customer reviews)This book is pretty much useless unless you are a total novice in both computer music production and composition/arrangement, since you if you're beyond novice level, you probably already known everything the book covers. The author also did not do his due diligence on research. He called VST "Virtual Sythesizer Technology," when it's actually "Virtual Studio Technology. The guy has never heard of the internet? It's the first thing that comes up when you search "VST." Any computer musician worth his salt knows this--it's really really basic stuff. He then refers to plugins as VST's. That is also incorrect. They are plugins using the VST format, and if anything VSTI would be better than VST, but only for virtual instruments and does not apply to effects plugins. I'm guessing this guy probably doesn't even hang around prominent sites for computer musicians like KVRAudio. He then also refers to DAW and Ableton Live separately saying both can host VST's, as if Ableton Live isn't a DAW. Does he even know what DAW stands for? It almost seems like he's only got a cursory understanding of all this technology and terminology, and the half-assed his way through the research when writing the book. Maybe it's just carelessness, but don't people proofread their manuscripts before sending them to the printer? The instructional aspect of the book actually isn't bad, and if yo are a total beginner, it can certainly be helpful to you.

(More customer reviews)As an aspiring producer, I have long looked up to the indie queen Christine Vachon, and I was interested to read this book after having read her excellent SHOOTING TO KILL.I read that book when I was back in college, but this book is better.It's definitely more personal - in a way it reads like a memoir.

You feel like you are going through all the trials and tribulations with her.There's a lot of exciting stuff here - she battles the MPAA over Boys Don't Cry -- the bond company takes control of Far From Heaven-- shehas interactions with big stars like Jude Law and Julia Roberts.
I have never been to Sundance, but Vachon's Sundance diary takes you through that festival with her.

All this makes for a book that's immensely readable; I couldn't put it down.I really liked the spotlights from other industry figures, agents, studio heads and directors like John Cameron Mitchell (who did my favorite film, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH!)If you are in the industry, want to learn about the industry or are just plain curious about how movies get made, go out and get this book now!

(More customer reviews)I wasn't at all impressed with this book. If you want to know what gear Misstress Barbara uses or if you want to read yet another authors version of "the history of electronic music" then this is for you!

Me, well I sent it back. I had the book less than an hour and I'd already re-packed it up to ship back.

If you want a good reference book for electronic music then go pick up the 'Dance Music Manual: Toys, Tools and Techniques' by Rick Snoman. Now Snoman's book is an 'essential reference', seriously.
