(More customer reviews)For the most part these transcriptions of Art Tatum's improvisations/arrangements are done very well. Chords are listed for each corresponding measure so you harmonically can follow what's going on easily enough. It's very fun to follow Art Tatum recordings on the sheet to have a better idea of what he's doing. My only gripe would be that there is no fingering listed in this book and it's just a transcription of the notes. Yes, I do realize by running through Riccardo Scivales' book "The Right Hand According To Art Tatum" solves a lot of these problems, but it would've been nice to have the fingering laid out in this book. It would save a lot of time in figuring out what the legendary Art Tatum was actually doing with his hands. Overall, I would give the transcriptions a 5/5 but due to the lack of fingering I have to give it a 4/5.

(More customer reviews)This book completely changed my understanding and level of jazz piano playing.It is short and to the point, yet carefully written and complete.I like the fact that the author is a trained engineer.As a computerprogrammer I can identify with the way the book is layed out very logicallywith the assumption that the reader is intelligent, interested,andmotivated.I read the entire book while on trains going to and from work. I think it would have been a distraction to have read it while at a piano. The chord pattern excercises at the end of the book are excellent; I ammethododically going through all of them using a PC based sequencerconnected via midi to an electronic keyboard.If you only buy one bookon jazz piano, I think it should be this one. The next book to readafter this one, in my opinion is "All about Chords".I am almostfinished reading it;I could never have handled it if I hadn't read"Modern Jazz Piano" first. The two books together aremagnificently complete. I have a quite a library of jazz piano and jazzbooks; most of them are padded and not of much use."Modern JazzPiano" is by contrast a classic that every jazz pianist should have.I lost many years because I was brain-washed into believing the JohnMehegan jazz system as taught at Julliard was the only way to learn jazz. Inow believe the Julliard system is hopelessly complicated and noteffective.The traditional harmony systems used in "Modern JazzPiano" are the best and also the most popular.It is not somethingesoteric that only propeller heads know about. Buy it and hold onto it. Even if it sits on your bookshelf for years, there will come a day when itwill speak eloquently to you and change your level of playing andunderstanding.

500 Piano Intros for the Great Standards (The Steinway Library of Piano Music) Review

(More customer reviews)Some time ago I was at the sheet music store in San Francisco when this particular book caught my attention.

I grabbed the book, went over and sat down at the keyboard and played some of the intros.I was so impressed that I immediately bought the book.

What particularly impressed me were the progressions on page 67 and 68.The 1 VI II V progression is pretty common in popular music. Many songs contain this progression.

What this book does differently is it presents two alternative voicings with beautiful jazzy chords.I am not a jazz pianist but I do like to make a jazzy sound and improvise, and using these slight variations makes a ridiculous difference.

Some weeks later I was asked to play piano at an open house.When I had run through all my material, I started improvising off this progression, and incorporating some of these well known songs such as Blue Moon, The Way You Look Tonight, Heart and Soul etc.

Someone came over and asked what I was playing. I said I didn't know, which was true because some hybrid song was coming out that sounded very melodic. They said wow, that's amazing.

I don't know if you're like me, but I learned more from reading and applying the 8 bars in those two pages than from plodding through entire books.

As you go through the intros, it is actually 125 different intros shown in 4 different keys so that you can practice playing in different keys. In so doing it experiments with a number of different styles Latin, Waltz, Blues, Country, Ellington, and it's more than enough to keep you occupied for a long period of time.It also has suggestions of various songs where you can use these intros, Bluesette, Georgia on My Mind.

For example in Latin it explores Rumba, Tango and Bossa Nova, with intros based around Jobim songs such as Girl From Ipanema, And How Insensitive.

I don't know if anyone will read this review, but I do hope you find it helpful.
