This book includes transcriptions of their playing on the "heads" of the tunes ( Billy Boy, Delilah, Fly me to the moon, Take five, Seven steps to heaven ... ), giving insight into these drummers mastery of song form and structure ; In addition, the book includes their drums-solos and drums-breaks fromm several jazz classics, with explanations of the tunes, fantastic !!! (More customer reviews)I bought this book as a result of listening to the performance of it on CD. I have always enjoyed listening to Beethoven, and his symphonies have retained a place on my shelves for years. However, being a pianist, I never had a chance to actually play them. The way Liszt transcribed Beethoven's works onto piano is astounding, as he writes in a very natural way. There are, of course, some details of certain harmonies left out, but the overall impression remains remarkably similar. I look forward to being able to purchase the next book of the series when it is released.

(More customer reviews)The solo transcriptions in this book are brilliant!It's like being given Steely Dan's top secret "playbook" for several of their hit songs.

I've been playing Steely Dan tunes on piano since I was in junior high (way back when, in '77), and even though I have a pretty good ear, I don't have a strong jazz background so I could never get Donald Fagen's chord voicings quite right.And all of the Steely Dan songbooks that I have are very crude approximations of what's really being played on the original recordings.This book has "filled in the gaps" for many of my favorite 'Dan tunes.

My favorites from this book are "I Got the News", the solo section of "Time Out of Mind", and the 'plastic organ' solo from "Do It Again" -- songs that I could only approximate, until now.
