The Songs of Stephen Foster [Paperback]

I find this collection of music to be particularly lovely and enjoyable. It is written for voice and piano accompaniment. The sheet music consists of the Stephen Foster originals. (So no guitar chords.)And I have to say, I find the versions to be particularly lovely."Beautiful Dreamer" has the prettiest piano accompaniment to it that I've seen. And even "Oh Susanna" is charming. The accompaniment only requires modest piano accomplishment and the songs are easily sung, so no one needs to be overwhelmed. In all the music is very light and pretty.I do recommend it!It's perfect for evenings at home or light entertaining.

Elementary Method for the Balalaika Review

Elementary Method for the Balalaika [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Until Bibs Ekkel wrote his Mel Bay's Complete Bailalaika Book this was *the* method to have. It was for many years the only method available in English, originally translated in 1964 from the original Russian-language edition. This is the same edition as published then, still worth the small investment. I still have my original 1964 copy!

The introductory material is succinct and gives you everything you would need to know to get started. Although the pictures are quite "old", they are helpful in reviewing your hand positions. This book is full of music throughout and would be an excellent companion to the Ekkel book. If you're serious about learning the balalaika you owe it to yourself to buy both books for the price of what would normally be a single music lesson.

A Russian Song Book Review

A Russian Song Book [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

I play several of the songs in this book on the Trumpet for my own enjoyment. It includes some very beautiful songs. My favorites are: The Light (Ogonek), for which somebody should write English lyrics and get recorded, the Song of Greeting, written by Dimitri Shostakovich, Stenka Razin (did he really have to drown the poor princess to win back the confidence of his band of brigands?), Dubinushka, a bitter revolutionary song; Podmoscovskaya vechera (Moscow Nights) which was recorded as a jazz piece and popularized in America by Kenny Ball, the maudlin Tyawmnaya Noch (Dark Night) as well as the ever popular Katiusha and Kalinka.

Pieces the book does not include, but that I wish it did:Proshanie Slavyanki (Farewell to Slavic Women), the best Russian march; and Dolinnuyo Dorogayu (popularized by Mary Hopkins as "Those were the Days."
