(More customer reviews)I have been teaching classroom music for over 30 years.I also teach guitar.I was always afraid to begin young children on guitar, because the coordination was too difficult for them.I discovered this book a few years ago.It is kid friendly. It has only a little music on each page, has fun pictures and clear explanations.A few years ago, I had several parents approach me to teach a guitar class to second graders.I have been using this book with the matching course book for about 5 years.The children love the book and are very excited as they advance through the pages.I see the advantage of 3 string chords, as well.The children learn to keep strumming as they change chords, rather than stopping to figure out how to make the chord.They also learn how to play simple melodies on the first three strings.The note speller is a great reinforcement of what they are learning in the course book.I highly recommend this guitar course to use for any beginning guitarist up through 10 years old.

(More customer reviews)For a basic overview of guitar playing, this book does the trick, but the examples and explanations are not up to par.The CD is okay, but annoying because it all goes too quickly.I learned more from the Mel Bay Chord diagrams than from this book which supposedly explains guitar playing.A good fingerpicking section, but forget about their lead guitar sections, just a bunch of scales, no explanations or anything.

Benny Goodman's Clarinet Method (Instrumental Jazz) Review

(More customer reviews)While many books on the clarinet are out on the market, it is a rare opportunity to experience one from a clarinetist with the fame, renown and talent of Benny Goodman. This short method book presents brief articles discussing basic techniques, methodology and even a little clarinet history. Mr. Goodman's knowledge and encouragement to the student are presented in a straightforward, no-nonsense style. The method book presents listings of all of the major and minor scales as well as over three dozen separate exercises working with timing, intervals, syncopation and more advanced chromatic work. The book also includes several of Mr. Goodman's solo works, including the accompaniments for the other instruments in the piece.

While the books is excellent in all respects, there are a couple of minor flaws. The first flaw is the lack of a fingering chart normally seen in most method books. This would indicate that Mr. Goodman and the subsequent editors felt the method was geared more towards intermediate and advanced students. This also leads to the second flaw, which is the focus on the more experienced student. The presentation of the material assumes the reader is familiar with the basics of music and is familiar with all of the basic fingerings of the clarinet's three major registers. The altissimo register and the upper clarion register are heavily emphasized and beginning students having issues with these registers would have difficulties without further technique development.

These very minor flaws do not detract from the fact that this small volume is a great method book for intermediate and advanced students and offers a rare insight into one of the greatest clarinet players of the 20th Century. Any serious clarinetist should pick up this book as they will be richly rewarded.

(More customer reviews)I've been teaching guitar for the past two years, and with my young students (5 to 11 yrs old) this is a highly effective series.I recently got the flash cards to use as a teaching aid, and the results were immediate even with my most challenging students.The Kids Guitar series has a clear focus on both music theory and guitar technique.It is fun and engaging for the students, and builds gradually through a series of exercises until the student is comfortable playing all six strings in the first position using standard music notation (not tabs).My only wish is that they had a book three.
