Double Stops For Cello Review

Double Stops For Cello [Paperback]

I use all of Rick Mooney's books with ALL my students and they are amazing. These books are the only way to ensure that beginning/intermediate students play double stops and thumb position every single day for the first few years of their studies. At the chance that Mr. Mooney happens to read this review, I would like to request a thumb book 3 and a double stops book 2 (ESPECIALLY double stops book 2)!

Position Pieces for Cello, Book 2 Review

I'm an adult learning the cello. This is an introduction to the Tenor Clef and includes positions through 7.I was able to work through this on my own. (with an occasional session with a friend cellist) It took me about a year, but I feel fairly competent playing in the Tenor Clef and some of the upper positions.

Position Pieces for Cello, Book 2 fills the pedagogical gap between the first book of ^Position Pieces} (0762) and the two ^Thumb Position for Cello} (0763 and 0764) books in that it covers the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions. It systematically introduces ways to find the correct location of each position and also to understand the various finger patterns required.

Cello Solos EFS 40 Review

Cello Solos EFS 40 [Paperback]

I am an adult intermediate level cello student (appr. early HS equivalent).I bought this book for fun, and now my teacher assigns me a piece each week to work on.It is refreshing to actually work on lyrical solo pieces to take a break from the scales and etudes.

Although these seem like a break from the etudes, you still have lots of building and learning material here. They make shifting exercises fun for example.

Plus, it comes with a full piano accompaniement that is so useful for students to play with to check intonation.

My teacher also uses the book to play along on the cello for accompaniement for the same purpose (works really well for the Handel Largo since the bass line in the piano score functions as continuo part for a second cello).Great tunes from opera, symphony, etc. This is a fun book to play from.

One downside is the suggested fingerings. While most make sense, some are sort of silly in the goal to avoid the dreaded random open string. My teacher changes the fingerings when she assigns me a new piece. However, anyone on a level to play these pieces will recognize there are alternative fingerings and can adapt to their own use.
