Other than a brief introduction, this book lacked any explanation of the music. Each of the 50 exercises is numbered--and that's it. No indication of whether the style was samba, bossa nova, lambada, or any of the others listed on the back cover. No explanation of what distinguishes the styles from one another or how you would use the rhythms in playing situations. I know the "Hanon" series is not meant to explain things deeply, but even a minimum (such as naming the exercises) would be an improvement. A CD demonstrating the rhythms would also have been helpful. Most of the exercises progressed rapidly through the 12 key centers, with a measure or two in each, so you have to concentrate on chromatic voicings at the same time as the rather difficult rhythms. The exercises are what I would call "montunos" if such a concept exists in Brazilian playing--bass-and-chord patterns. The heaviness of the exercises differs from the lightness of piano parts I've heard in recorded bossa nova ensembles.
