There's another reviewer who complains that this book contains too many pieces by nonentities such as James Hook and Daniel Gottlob, and too few by luminaries such as Beethoven and Mozart.I don't think it's a fair complaint.

Consider the book's stated philosophy:only unaltered, original pieces are included. That limits them quite a bit. It's an early intermediate book, yet Mozart and Beethoven wrote very few things that were simple enough for such inclusion. In fact, the few Mozart pieces in here have Kochel numbers of less than five!In other words, he wrote them when he was just out of diapers.

Get it?This is not a book of SIMPLIFIED piano classics, such as the excellently done Easy Piano Classics (Bastien Older Beginner Piano Library).Everything you're seeing is unsimplified.

I'm not so hot on this anthology, however.Another idea the editors had was to avoid editing the text. So, for example, none of the selections from the Anna Magdalena notebook have any of those staccatos you're used to.It's up to you do make decisions about tempo, dynamics, ornamentation, etc.In the selections after 1800 this doesn't make much of a difference, but for those earlier Baroque pieces it really gives them a spare, aseptic quality.

That's the problem, in my view. You're telling me that the student who goes through this is sophisticated enough to supply the correct flavorings to Anna Magdalena, yet low-leveled enough to only be capable of such simple pieces to begin with?Who's ever seen a student like that?

Hal Leonard Abba Gold: Greatest Hits (Piano/Vocal/Guitar) Review

Hal Leonard Abba Gold: Greatest Hits
Average Reviews:

This book is certainly worth getting if you want to play ABBA's songs. However, several of the songs (Fernando, Dancing Queen, Chiquitita, and others) tend to leave out some of the notes that are best known in the song. Chiquitita leaves out both the intro and the instrumental ending; Fernando leaves out the intro, and Dancing Queen leaves out some crucial 'fill' notes in the verses that are included in the "Easy Piano" version according to the "Look Inside" feature on this web site (Amazon.com).

Despite these few things, It's still fun to play the songs! And it does include all the songs from the album of the same name.

Fantasy in F Minor, Barcarolle, Berceuse and Other Works for Solo Piano Review

Fantasy in F Minor, Barcarolle, Berceuse and Other Works for Solo Piano [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chopin's music is usually published by category--i.e. Mazurkas, Polonaises, Walzes, Etudes, etc. There are a number of works that don't fit into any of these categories such as the glorious and technically horrific Berceuse and the surprisingly easy to read but showy Tarentelle--not only gorgeous but a good exercise for technical proficiency.
This book is worth having just for the Berceuse and Tarantella, and also for the Barcarolle, another brilliant and showy work that is all too rarely played. This is a great addition to any piano music library, especially if you adore Chopin. Easy to read edition, clear print.

Clementi: Sonatinas, Op. 36, 37, 38 (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics, Vol.40) Review

Clementi: Sonatinas, Op. 36, 37, 38 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The volume consists of op. 36, which consists of the 6 sonatinas for which Clementi is best known, 3 more sonatinas which comprise op. 37, and 3 more which comprise op. 38.Although the third movement of op. 37 no. 3 is quite melodious, op. 36 still reigns as the most enjoyable of the three.

Don't let the opus numbers mislead you.Clementi composed op. 37 and op. 38 in 1780 and op. 36 in 1798.The opus numbers were assigned by someone later, and not by Clementi.

It seems that many composers have a tendency to become more complex during the course of their careers.Clementi, apparently, was an exception.

This is off the subject, but the University of Tennessee Library has a set of the complete works of Clementi reproduced in manuscript form. There is a delightful set of waltzes in this set.

If anyone reading this review happens to be in the music publishing business, do us all a favor and publish those waltzes.

The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition) Review

The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If this is too intimidating for you, I would start with Czerny -- Practical Method, Op. 599 (Complete) (Alfred Masterwork Edition), which is thinner and simpler than this.

If THAT'S too difficult for you, I would fall back to Preliminary School of Dexterity, Op. 636, which is about as low as you can go and still be playing authentic Czerny that hasn't been watered down.(I don't know why Amazon doesn't have a picture of it:it's certainly not rare or out of print.)

Only after finishing that should you go for the mother lode, the School of Velocity.

All of these Alfred editions are the best:carefully edited and handsomely presented.Palmer didn't simply run those old galleys again:everything's been recomposited and -- importantly for me -- the notes have been made larger where possible. At any rate, it's certainly more readable than that old yellow version everyone seems to own.

Symphony No. 9 (Dover Miniature Scores) Review

Symphony No. 9 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dover scores have been invaluable to me as an adult.I believe the cheap, large versions of complete operas and symphonies, chamber music and solo instrumentals, began to show up around 1981.I say this only because I bought every one that came along, with rare exception, and loved the fact that at last I had something akin to what the conductor would look at, not a partitur that was 5 X 8.I would say that by 1985 I owned between 80 and 100 Dovers. All were large and take up a lot of shelf space. But they are clearly legible without glasses for me.

The "small size" has now been revisited upon us.It seems that with the Mahler Symphonies all have been reissued in a "single size" packaging. As far as I'm concerned, it's nice to have a cheap well made score, but the smaller size now makes the several I've bought almost impossible to read. The ninth requires high powered reading glasses as does the third. These are the two "new" ones that I have. The rest of the Mahler's are from the old, large Dover plates. While they may not be perfectly accurate in terms of up to the minute performance practices, their visual convenience trumps the small print of the newer more accurate (I hope!) editions.Worth having if you can't get anything larger, but better to go to a used book store and buy the larger scores if they're still available. If you can't do that, at least don't strain your eyes!

I find this collection of music to be particularly lovely and enjoyable. It is written for voice and piano accompaniment. The sheet music consists of the Stephen Foster originals. (So no guitar chords.)And I have to say, I find the versions to be particularly lovely."Beautiful Dreamer" has the prettiest piano accompaniment to it that I've seen. And even "Oh Susanna" is charming. The accompaniment only requires modest piano accomplishment and the songs are easily sung, so no one needs to be overwhelmed. In all the music is very light and pretty.I do recommend it!It's perfect for evenings at home or light entertaining.

Sonatas (A Kalmus Classic Edition) Review

Sonatas [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The scores are generally accurate and I love that it's Urtext and without much editorial suggestions, in fact, there isn't any single writing through out the book, which comes to the reason why it is only three stars: no fingering at all. Other bothersome defects are its bindings (mine's already fallen apart and I've only had it for less than a year.) Also, it doesn't contain the complete sonatas. Lastly, though the scores are generally easy to read, but I did find some faded prints and measures (in fact, a lot of them) that should be spread longer for easy reading are instead squashed together.

I'd buy a more expensive book for better quality instead of this one.

Great Keyboard Sonatas, Series I Review

Great Keyboard Sonatas, Series I [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a nice inexpensive edition of some really wonderful sonatas, easily readable and with typical Dover binding that takes the abuse I give my piano books fairly well. The only warning that I would give for this book is that the editor presumed to give some dynamic and tempo markings specifically for piano that aren't in accordance with the best research on baroque performance. I would definatly recommend it for amatuer musicians because of it's usability, but college music majors would be advised to find a different edition.
