(More customer reviews)This flute solo recital book/collection should be in the basic repertoire or library of any young flutist.The pieces cover several eras of musical style-baroque, classical and romantic as well as the impressionistic andmodern era.How?Through solo pieces by the masters:Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart , Haydn,Schubert,Schumann, Brahms, Debussey and Satie.
Any flutist who has finished their intermediate level instruction (intermediate or second level band book)can dive into these pieces.One will find all the basic meters-including some 3/8 time-and triplet and basic sixteenth note rhythms. The range demands are not extreme and the stylistic elements of the flute musician-mordents, trills, grace notes and some fast rapid passages here and there-will provide fine training for a young player. These would be excellent choices for Solo and Ensemble festivals in the spring and even for offertory music in houses of worship. Low cs and the extreme high register are avoided and many of the melodies will be familiar to the classically trained ear.Also,the pieces are neither too short or too long for the young performer.

The printed music edition-it's type and layout-make it easy for the performers to read and execute the well written passages.Schirmer is well known for its excellent musical typecast and layout and this collection is no exception to its legacy.

As a music educator and flute student myself, I find this to be an excellent collection of teaching /recital pieces and heartily recommend it to flute instructor and student alike,regardless of the level of musical proficiency.A more tasteful and well compiled collectionwould be difficult to find. I suggest adding this to your personal or school band/orchestral library for solo and ensemble performance.
