Schaum Note Speller / Book 2 (Revised) (Schaum Method Supplement) Review

Schaum Note Speller / Book 2 [Paperback]

I bought this to help me learn the notes for learning how to play piano. Mom recommended it. (she taught piano lessons when I was a baby 30 years ago)

She said it is a classic, and although it is kind of boring, this is what's needed to learn the notes so that I can ultimately read music and play Mozart. It seems to be working.

I leave it in the bathroom with a pencil, and work on it for those few minutes when there's nothing else to do with my mind. ;)

Movement That Fits: Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Suzuki Method Review

Movement That Fits: Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Suzuki Method [Paperback]

The book consists of numerous ideas in which gross motor activity is incorporated either with the the Twinkle variations, with other songs in the first Suzuki book, or with short pieces written by the author herself.

The book is easy to read because it contains numerous illustrations and musical examples.

I give it only a 4 because I like discussion of educational philosophy better than I like lesson plans. If you are a teacher who prefers lesson plans, you might give it a 5.

Measure Up! (The Game Series) Review

Measure Up [Cards]
Average Reviews:

I am always on the lookout for music games that I can play with my piano students during lessons. This one has been a big hit. Each player is dealt several cards, some of which are time signatures and some of which are notes or rests. During your turn, you try to make up a measure using the cards in your hand (first, a time signature to set the parameter, and then notes and/or rests to fill that many beats). I must admit to simplifying the rules and using all note value cards in any time signature (as opposed to suits of different time signatures), but my students pick up the concept quickly and feel proud of themselves. Highly recommended.

Music Mind Games Review

Music Mind Games [Paperback]

I am extremely picky about teaching resources and activities, and I cannot say enough good things about this book. The main thing that sets it apart is that everything is incredibly thought-out and organized, and there is a*philopsophy* behind everything. A lot of music teacher activity books arejust a bunch of random games carelessly thrown together with little or nothought about what the purpose is, or WHY that approach is best.
Believeit or not, I read this book years after completing a music degree, and ithelped me realize and understand some things about music theory for thefirst time. I have used these activities with grades k-8 and also inprivate piano lessons. It is truly excellent.
