The Luthier's Handbook: A Guide to Building Great Tone in Acoustic Stringed Instruments Review

The Luthier's Handbook: A Guide to Building Great Tone in Acoustic Stringed Instruments [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

It's unfortunate the author didn't choose a better title. You'd probably expect THE Luthiers Handbook to be a how-to, but it's nothing like that.Actually it reads more like a college-level textbook. Engineering/techies will probably love it, as will anyone seriously interested in the how & why of fine instrument architecture. There's a lot in here about the tonal properties of various woods, bracings, etc.Even if you never figure out the author's 'tuning' method (or don't have your own home physics lab) you still might find yourself tapping on soundboards and thinking about such things. For the beginning luthier sticking to the tried and true, it's not essential reading however.

Making an Archtop Guitar [Paperback]

As an archtop owner and player for nearly thirty years, I would call this book a must read for anyone who is interested in purchasing a vintage archtop or buying a new one. Benedetto leads the reader into a deepappreciation of the painstaking detail that goes into The Making of anArchtop. He describes the level of attention that should be evident on eachcomponent of the guitar, and how it effects the player (and the price) inthe end. The significance of learning the process of material selection, construction sequencing and design considerations might well lead thereader towards a custom made instrument. This book is a credit to all theindependent luthiers out there whose trade is no longer a secret.

This tutorial is a great resource for anyone who has ever had less than optimal results building a musical instrument. The "magic" of getting the best sound possible out of an instrument is explained in simple, easy to follow (and easy to repeat) steps. I wish I'd had this information many years ago. Even if you're not a builder, this book explains many things about how instruments "work". I would recommend this volume to anyone interested in understanding how the various parts of an instrument work together, to produce what we hear. This book will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on many instruments over the coming years. Well done Mr. Siminoff!

Constructing a Solid-Body Guitar: A Complete Technical Guide (Reference) Review

Constructing a Solid-Body Guitar: A Complete Technical Guide [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

In search for information on my hobby, guitar construction, I have run into this book.Compaired to other literature on the subject, this book is very shallow when it comes to variations in construction techniques, explinations on wood selection for bodies and necks, and techniques infinishing. The book basically explains how to build one guitar, whichhappens to be a generic undersized version of a Les Paul.As for theconstruction of the neck and body, there is only one technique shown withno suggestions for verying the technique. In other words, if you are newto guitar construction and don't have tools like a table saw, bench topbelt sander, router, horizontal drill press, etc..., you will probablyconstruct a poorly sounding guitar. When the subject of wiring comes up,all you have is information on two wiring circuits, a single coil circuitand a double coil circuit. On a possitive note, the book does explain alittle about every aspect of guitar construction, it tells you one way how,but not why.
