Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The method concentrates on single note playing based around the CAGED method. Joe uses an extra intermediate position as well as the usual five CAGED positions. The intermediate position was dropped from his later book "Joe Pass On Guitar".
As well as the major, minor (natural, melodic and harmonic), dominant, altereddominant, whole tone and diminished scales, there are examples of scales built on chords. No pentatonic scales are used. All of these scales are related to CAGED positions.
The scale examples and chromatic patterns use string numbers, fingering and list the CAGED form that is used to ease reading and hand positioning; the CAGED concept is illustrated using a fret board diagram. The rest of the book is entirely in standard notation, so you must be able to read music. There is a short section on Blues lines and Jazz licks.
The book ends with five solos transcribed from Joes recordings; unfortunately the discography lists all of the transcriptions as coming from the "Joe Pass at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975", and does not list the source for "Joe's Blues". Here is a corrected list of the tracks transcribed:
"Joe's Blues" - from "Intercontinental" - Joe Pass.
"Blues for Nina", "Nobs", "Grete" - all from "Joe Pass at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 [Live]"
"Alison" - from "The Montreux Collection" - various artists
"Joe's Blues" is a transcription of the full track. In my opinion, this is one of the best blues that Joe ever recorded. The other transcriptions are one chorus each - i.e they are not complete transcriptions.
This book is more specialized than Joe's other methods, but is well worth the price for the transcription of "Joe's Blues" alone.
