I've been playing through the examples in this book, and overall, I think this book is a solid effort at djembe instruction. I'm also using it to introduce my Mom to the djembe, and its clear approach has been very helpful.

The nice descriptions and pictures of fundamental djembe technique were major pluses. Seeing exactly how different hits look helped me get a more consistent tone. Also, the book is litterally packed with excercises. They follow different themes, which has helped me boost my creativity with the instrument as I play different variations. Quite simply, it's hard to get into a rut with this book.

The book doesn't go into a great amount of detail about the West African cultural music that the djembe generally accompanies, nor does it give transcriptions of "traditional" beats that accompany different celebrations. If you want to work on purely learning authentic African rhythms, I would suggest checking out Thione Diop's instructional DVD. If you need a creative and technical boost, however, this book is a great choice.

Product Description:
This is the complete method book for the djembe, an African tuned drum that is becoming ever more popular in various styles of music. The author starts from this happy pre-supposition: Everyone can play the djembe! This instrument has characteristic sounds and phrases, from bold to extremely subtle. One musician stated, "Beating the drum with bare hands is not only playing the drum. It is truly touching the sound which is intangible." The method starts at the very beginning, defining the most basic aspects of the drum and its playing. Progressive exercises, teaching increasingly complex rhythms, accents and phrasing, comprise the bulk of the method.
