Product Description:
A star of two well-remembered television series, The FBI and 77 Sunset Strip, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. looks back on the many different roads he has traveled in his lifetime and recreates his most memorable experiences in the prose of a true stylist. The son of two legendary musical talents, the violinist Efrem Zimbalist and the operatic soprano Alma Gluck, Efrem Jr. grew up on an estate in the Connecticut countryside. His was a world of comfort and security-and, of course, classical music.
After his graduation from Yale and his World War II military service-and long before he was a recognized actor-Zimbalist broke a show business barrier as coproducer of Gian Carlo Menotti's operatic double bill, The Medium and The Telephone, on Broadway. Its critical and (surprising) commercial success led to Zimbalist's coproduction of Menotti's next opera, The Consul, also on Broadway and also with gratifying results, including the Pulitzer Prize. But he was by then determined to make acting his career, which began in the New York theater, blossomed when he went to Hollywood (The Crowded Sky, Deep Six, House of Strangers, The Chapman Report, Wait Until Dark) and reached a crescendo on television with six seasons on 77 Sunset Strip and nine on The FBI.
The book abounds in anecdotes about show business, family, travels in the United States and abroad, and finally Zimbalist's life today as a farmer in Solvang, California, about 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. What most distinguishes this book is that, whatever the topic, Zimbalist writes with clarity, grace, precision and sincerity. There are no ghosts hovering over his narrative. Every word comes with skill from the same generous source.
