(More customer reviews)This book is concise. The illustrations are to the point and not
so cutesy as to be useful only for very young beginner students.
I have found several of the exercizes useful to copy and use as
supplements. The Pace method is the most INTEGRATIVE between
theory and practice of all the most well known methods I've reviewed. This book, as all material based on Pace's musical philosophy (and mine, having studied at Columbia Teacher's College Music Education Master's Program, of which he was theHead for 42 years), uses short pieces, exercizes and llustrations to teach the basics of music theory and its application to the technique and practice of playing the piano. This way of learning allows students to venture into improvising and playing all styles of Western music as they have a strong basic command of the principles of all Western music, from Bach to Coldplay, from Bill Evans to Beethoven, to play and write their own music of any style of music that they want to learn to play. For students to
have some choice in what they are motivated to learn, and to see
that what they are working on has some relationship to what they
like to listen to in the rest of their lives makes studying music
so much more exciting. That does not mean they can limit their
study to only what they hear on the radio, as that would not be
sufficient knowledge to lead them to the basics necessary to be
able to learn ALL types of music. But it gives the student a piece of ownership in whatever they're working on, and FUN! a very important part of learning anything. Bravo! Robert Pace. He opened a giant door for me after studying for many years, with a
lot of frustration just reading notes off the page. I was an
excellent piano student and got a lot of praise and opportunities
for my musical hard work and "talent". But with all the hours of
practicing, and intellectual knowledge in my brain, no teacher ever taught me how to integrate the theory with the technique.
So I couldn't play for fun with other kids with much less ability
than I had. My students, thanks to Robert Pace's method, will be
able to maximize their talent and the work they put in to playing the piano and learning the wonderful language of music. Sincerely,E.R.pianojazz
