One of the biggest strengths of this book is that it's very concise; it teaches the fundamental rock guitar concepts clearly and directly without unnecessary verbiage (in contrast, Guitar For Dummies likes to talk...talk...talk). Though it is lacking helpful tips to help you through the places where beginners often have trouble, like the difficulties of physically playing open chords and barre chords.

There are many thorough exercises to practise the concepts taught, but I've found they get very tedious and tiresome before long. There are no 'actual' songs in this book; there are many licks, riffs (many are similar to famous ones), and generic blues chord progressions. For some of the progressions, you're encouraged to make up your own melodies over top; you'll be making your own bits of music and surprising yourself in dong so. This book is good at teaching basic music theory, and showing how it's applied. At the end of the book you'll find a list of recommended actual rocks songs for practice.

Note that this book doesn't talk about equipment or how to get a particular guitar tone. There are a few cool, heavy chord progressions and smoking licks, but don't expect a lot of real heavy stuff (what you might expect based on the cover photo). A lot of the material has a Led Zeppelin-type feel rather than really hard rock/metal.
